I would like to start a thread that discusses the effectiveness of modifications. I will use mine as an example from most effective to least effective.

0. Tool boxes mounted on the top of the engine cover. One is mounted in front of the fan and one behind the fan. I used plastic ammunition boxes from Northern. This is very useful for storing small tools, gloves, and silicon spray.

1. Move the lights to under the ROPS so that you can see over the attachments at night. I also added a backup light, a flashing orange strobe light, a dome light and a triangle on the back of the engine cover (it is spaced about ½ inch off of the cover to allow air flow in). I have a four bank switch (from PEP boys) to control all lights separately. It is mounted under the ROPS. I rarely use the dome light, but the others are a great improvement.

2. Bumper – A 2 X 6 with a hole in it and a steel reinforcement plate is attached to the rear hitch with the hitch pin. The steel plate has a hole in it for the hitch pin and another hole for a trailer ball. This protects the tractor if you back into something. A friend pushed his back in about an inch.

3. A ROPS Rack – A storage area with 2 X4’s as the sides and ¼ inch plywood as the bottom. I ran screws from below into the 2X 4 to hold it in place. It holds tow straps, a small tool box, a winch, and a come along. I also attached reflective tape on the front, back and sides.

4. Cigarette lighter outlet – Mostly used for a charger that I connect to it when the tractor is not being used. It is sometimes used to charge an old cell phone.

5. Oil Pressure Light – I added a light where the light switch used to be and wired it to the oil pressure switch that is already on the engine. I have never had it alarm once the engine starts, but it could save the engine some day. It might also tell you if the slope is too great and oil flows away from the oil intake.

6. I attached a folding saw to one ROPS support and a machete to the other with tie wraps. I rarely use either one anymore.

That’s about it. What have other's got to say.

It's in another active thread, so no details, but sure like my external shut off valve!

Time and money allowing.....oh the mods rattling around my otherwise empty head! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I really like all of those mods! I'd love to see pics and/or up close if you're not too far from the Danville, VA area. You could likely start an after-market mod shop where folks would drop off their PTs to accesorize. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks. The details and pictures are in another thread. Just sort on my name and you should find it. I will move it to the top as well. Let me know if you cannot find it. I am in Powhatan Va. Send me a PM if you want to see the mods in person.

RichP had already mounted two additional lights under the canopy and installed a fire extinguisher on the PT 425 that I bought from him. Since I bought it, I've done a few minor mods...

1. The one that I'm most pleased with is moving the Aux PTO control lever to the left side of the dashboard, where it can be used with the left hand while the right hand is controlling the lift/tilt joystick. This works well for both the grapple bucket and the mini-hoe.

2. I changed the hydraulic oil from 10W40 dino oil to 20W50 Amsoil synthetic. This made a noticeable improvement in wheelmotor torque when the oil gets hot.

3. I added windshield washer fluid to my tires, along with Hydro-Seal leak sealant (similar to Slime for fluid-filled tires). This adds about 60 pounds per wheel of additional weight, down low in contact with the ground. This was done to increase "slope-holding" capability, and add additional counterweight for lifting heavy loads on the front. I am also experimenting with 40 lb wheel weights on the rear wheels, in addition to fill them. With all this extra weight (approximately 100 lbs per wheel), my lift cylinders will still lift the rear of the PT off the ground on level ground, without bypassing. I'll likely remove those additional wheelweights, to reduce stress on the bearings and wheelmotors.

4. I added an afternmarket "teapot" muffler to the exhaust tip on the Kohler 25, which quietens it down a bit at full throttle:

A few less decibels

5. I also added a toolbox on top of the hood in front of the fan:

I added a mirror on the ROPS as well as a fire extinguisher. I also implemented some mods that I learnt here on TBN - I built a trailer hitch (thank you Fourteen), put a tow hook on the front (thank you MossRoad), and installed a 12v power outlet under the dash for my rotating beacon this winter.

Here's a pic of the trailer hitch
