The exhaust pipe on my Ford 3000 comes out underneath the rear axel and just before the end makes a turn down. The problem is whenever I drive over loose dirt it kicks up a dust storm that gets pretty annoying. Anything wrong with cutting the down turn off and just letting it blow straight back?

I don't see why not as long at it's not blowing on a rubber hydraulic hose or something delicate like wires and such. The only problem I'd see is that the exhaust will have an easier path to the operator as it won't be directed away from you. Give it a try. If it is noticable then you can redirect it away to the side or something instead of directly down into the ground. Maybe if you take the elbow off at 45 degrees and see how that works before you go straight back.

Won't changing the pipe length change back pressure, etc, with unpredictible results in noise, engine performance, diesel smoke path /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif, etc.
Kinda makes me think of paraphrasing the carpenter's adage--think twice before you cut once.

My exhaust pipe goes forward and turns down at the front axle. When I'm on grass or it's wet out it works great, but in dry conditions, it's creates as bad a dust storm as my mower.
I stuck a crow bar in the end of the pipe one day when it was still hot and bent it up so it now exits strait out the side.
WOW, sure made a huge difference!!!!

Finally got mad enough to take my sawsall to it today.. Didn't cut enough off, still has a slight down turn, dust isn't quite as bad but still a problem. Spent most of the day on it and didn't notice any ill effects with the tractor or me...
