Montana 4540 pto speeds

The users manual on this tractor has me confused. From the way that I read it, the pto runs 540 rpm with engine speed at 2300 rpm with the range selector in low range. Even in 4th gear I can walk faster than it moves. Am I wrong that it has to be in low range for 540 rpm? I don't want to damage my rotary cutter (or bush-hog as they are all called down here) by spinning it too fast.

I have previously used this cutter behind a MF135 to keep a 9 ac field mowed a few times a year since 2005. I always run it in low range/3rd gear or sometimes high range/1st gear. Am I over speeding the cutter in high range with the Massey?

Keep in mind it has a creeper gear as well as high and low range ... I usually cut in Hi Range 1st gear and run the tach up to the "red" indicated pto on the tach.

If you can walk faster that it goes in low range 4th gear I'm thinking you have the creeper engaged.

Also the 540 pto is 540 no mater what gear your in.

I guess what you are calling "creeper" is Range 1. It has a range lever on the left of the driver marked 1, 2 and 3. What I was calling low range was "range 1". Makes more sense to me now. Thanks!

No problem ... mine is a 4340 and on the left side is two levers, 4 WD on/off and Creeper on/off ... on the right 2 levers High/Low and gears 1-4 ... I'm thinking on yours ... 1 is creep 2 is low and 3 is high ... (Maybe)

And again 540 pto is just that 540 no matter the gear.

I'm near Jackson now but I'm from the H'burg area. You must be talking about T.Smith. I have a parts list with Johnny there now trying to get prices on some pieces for the FEL. The PO had sheared some bolts and lost some spacers. Small world, ain't it? LoL

Yep T. Smith .. Johnny will do all he can for you. When I owned a stockyard in Alabama they where regulars at our horse sale. In fact they still run a horse sale in H'burg.
