HI FOLKS, I got to use my chipper again finally.First a klittle background on my wood lot. i have a section of my woodlot, from 2003-2004 with large neat brush piles. Then i have the brush from this years 5 cords,in which i left it where it fell.I thought it might save some handling, but this was the wrong thing to do,because all the people that want you got to help ,vanish when you need them .So while you are dragging brush to the chipper, the tracter sits there idling a lotand wasting fuel
Now,as alot of you know ,i bought the SALSCO 600 in febuary [when i bought my bx-23.I have mabey chipped for an hour at home, testing what it would take etc[check my other threads].Well my mother in law got sick,so wifey told me to leave the atvs, home, and take Bota up to camp[and woodlot],because she was going to spend time up the road at her moms.
I decided to do the most recent scattered brush from this year.I brought my stihl to cut out any big crotchs,i might have missed, along with some bush cutters.I never had to start the saw all weekend, the shears were all i needed, and in which i didnt use much.POPLAR is the worse the limbs come staight out on it.SPRUCE AND FIRbows which tend to clog the hopper when fresh cut ,feed great when dried,as i was chipping whole 3.5 inch trees easily. The weight of the wood would self feed most of the limbs, and what didnt would get pushed in by the next.Im not saying i didnt have to give it a pushnow and then, but i think this top feeding unit was a good idea.
ONE PROBLEM,i did have was after using it that little bit at home last spring, the big ones with any length ,would stall the chipper, and smoke the belts.During a brief shower, i took the covers off, loosened the bearings and tightened the belts[this was a bear]problem solved,it never happened again,I DID PUt A long wet log through, which clogged the out feed shoot .Not realizing it ,i fed the next peice, and stalled the tracter,i guess the belts were tight!!! This was the only time in 6 hours this happened, guess it was a fluke,
I gave my daughter the camera and told her to get some action shots for you folks.Unfortunetly a ten year olds attention span, doesnt last long, and she went to play dolls with her sister, and didnt get any great pics.
On sunday after cleaning up this years brush,i decided to tackle one of those monster piles of dry dry brush. i would estimate it was about 20 ft around and 7 ft high[of course it was higher but has settled over the winters.DONE IN ABOUT ONE HOUR 15 MINUTES. Boy was it dusty, but it chipped fine
The salso is a nice machine for my woodlot,if i was to do a major job.i would get amachine with a large capacity, and a feed roll system.Of course i think you would need more horse power too,but the 23 matchs good with the 600.Over all for around 2 grand i dont think you can buy,a better unit, this machine is made hevy duty.
Im not done yet,for my next trip up in a couple weeks,im going to take a pic of the pile, and take some action shots, and time it for you.Its hard for me to feed it and take pics, but ill try.
One other thought, these chips are so light they are hard to scoop up with the loader,it just wants to push them. They make atv trails wicked smooth. ESCAVADER
