I just got home from work tonight and had three messages on my voicemail at home.

All three messages were from well known politicians, urging me to vote for the presidential candidate of their choice.

All three calls showed up on my caller ID as "UNKNOWN CALLER"

I thought there was now a law that stated that the phone number of telemarketers had to appear on your caller ID. At least that's been my experience for the last several months, until today...

Is this yet another law that politicians have enacted for everyone, but exempted THEMSELVES from??? /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Answers to your questions are at the National Do Not Call Registry

Q: If I register my number on the National Do Not Call Registry, will it stop all telemarketing calls?

A: No. Placing your number on the National Do Not Call Registry will stop most, but not all, telemarketing calls. You may still receive calls from political organizations, charities, telephone surveyors or companies with which you have an existing business relationship.

Q: I get calls soliciting money for political organizations or for charities – will the National Do Not Call Registry stop those calls?

A: Political solicitations are not covered by the National Do Not Call Registry. Telemarketers calling to solicit charitable contributions are not covered by the registry, but if you make a request to a specific organization that they not call you, they are required to honor your request. If they subsequently call you again, they may be subject to a fine of up to $11,000.

I had 2 messages when I got home and got 2 more within 1 hour of being home. One of the many benefits of living in a 'battleground state'. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The two major candidates have been to Ohio over 60 times during this campaign. My immediate area has drawn considerable attention by both campaigns, after the mayor of the large city 16 miles to the east crossed party lines with his endorsement.

Alls I know is I will be glad it is over with soon. I think yesterday I got 15 phone calls from out of state. Numbers were always an area code then followed by 000-0000. The zero's always showed up. I guess I figured it was a bunch of zero's calling.

The way I finally took care of annoying phone calls. I changed my phone numbers to private unlisted and only give my number out to friends and family and at work.
It works for me..

If you don't want those calls, you can do like my brother did and went with a cell phone only. By doing this, they are not allowed to call you since you have to pay for the calls. I have been considering doing this as he swears by it. I'd just have to switch from DSL to Cable modem.

Prior to the National Do Not Call Registry I had a simple solution.
If it was a recorded message, hang up. Annoying, yes, but simple to resolve.
If it was a real person, about 5-10 seconds into the call (once you know what it's about), interrupt them and say you're interested but you need to answer the door (or anything to get off the phone for a second). Set the phone down and leave it there.
Don't really know how long they stay on the line but if I can interrupt them for at least a couple minutes, it doesn't bother me and someone else isn't getting called.

A couple of years back I got a call the evening before a state election from some national defense of marriage organization asking for my support in opposing Vermont's civil unions. I told the caller he wanted to talk to my better half, then shouted out, "Honey, it's for you!"

Sound of footsteps, then I picked up the phone again and in as deep a voice as I could manage, muttered, "Hello?"

The caller hung up. Gosh, sometimes I can be so wicked! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
