Just finished working on my seeder. As I ( and many of you ) suspected, it was a pre-lubed, 'non serviceable' model. The gearbox was 2 cast aluminum halves sandwhiched around the ptoshaft/seeder drive, and 2 captive seals / bearings. Seals were fine and bearings and gears showed no noticeable wear. Grease in it looked like it had had it.

Cleaned it up, and selected an area that was 3/8" thick ( sides and mounting areas were 1/2" ), and dimpled/drilled/tapped/packed and burped.

No leads at the seals or the zerk. Ended up using a 7/32 bit and a combo zerk "T" wrench that had a zerk socket, broken zerk extractor, and thread tap on it. Couldn't have been easier.

I will de-grease it and paint it this weekend.. cant decide whether to go back with it's oem red.. or to paint it nice ford blue. It would look fine in red hanging on one of my N's.. though if I did it in ford blue, it would give me an excuse to drive that shiny ford 5000 around the pasture a bit more...

Can't wait to get something to seed/spread now.

Great deal too.. 150$ plus the price of a pack of zerks.

Pto shaft is nicely un-stuck and greased and slides in and out freely.

In cleaning up the seeder I notice it has an adjustable opening on the bottom letting you choose 1/2/3 drop holes, as well as having the adjustable handle to open the seed gate.. etc... looks to be a great unit...

Soundguy, looks like a nice job on the grease zerk. I'll bet after it's painted, it will look brand new, and probably work better than a new one. I learn a lot watching you guys and appreciate you sharing! I've got a quick question, when you grease this thing, is there someplace for the displaced grease or air to escape? Does it seep through the seals? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Thanks!

Many of these seeders are all the same, different labels. If you want a manual for it, & parts source, check out the worksaver web site. They have on-line manuals, parts diagrams, etc.

It depends on the application. I've seen lots of gearboxes of various types converted to grease... for various reasons. For instance.. on steering boxes with bad oil seals on the sectors.. many people convert to grease.. the bad seals act as the air/grease vent. I've seen some old tiller and mower boxes with slightly 'seeping' seals, and the owner does one of 2 things.. weither installs a zerk near the original oil filler plug, or uses a zer and adapter inthe original oil plug. In the first case, with both zerk and plug.. the oem filler can be removed during greasing, or if it is vented, left in place. In the latter, all you have to do is thread the zerk/plug combo in a thread or two and grease and check.. then leave some air room and put the oem vented plug back in.

In my case.. there was no oem fill plug as it was a maint free unit. I could have tapped for a pipe plug and the zerk to relieve pressure while greasing.. or loosen the zerk to relieve pressure every now and then. Fortunately my seals were good enough to trap air and grease.. so the 'burping' was necescary.

As a last note.. When converting a box to grease from oil.. I like to do 1 of 2 things. If available, i like to use a very thin and sticky 0# grease.. like a JD Cornhead grease.. as it will flow back into voids at the end of the day. Or if that is not available any 0# grease ( or regular tube grease if 0# is not available), pumped in, and them a little heavy gear oil mixed in.. like a 90w, 85/140, etc.. to make it a tad mushy... but not runny.

Don't know why but I was thinking about a seeder used in a garden when I saw your first post SoundGuy. Looks like your doing a fine job on the grass seeder/fertilizer though. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
