HI folks,
Thought id show off my splitter ive been working on for 15 years.:D It seems i modify it each year to make it easier, faster.I started with some scrap i beams and a boat trailer axle, that i shortened. The small i beam the pusher runs, the piston, and the 5 hp briggs, on was a tiny splitter that i bought for 75 bucks in a garage sale 15 years ago.It sat about 4 inches off the ground.:D Well i put all this togeather to make a respectable unit.a YEAR OR SO LATER,I ADDED A NORTHERN two stage pump.detent handle, and bigger hydro tank.It became a very strong and fast splitter. The wedge use to be on the trailer hitch end,but the wood fell between the atv and the splitter ,and required moving it.I cut things up a couple years ago,and reversed it.At the same time i added another beam so now i stand perfectly straight when operating.I dont touch the split wood now,it pushes itself up into a neat pile, and when it gets 5 ft high or so ,i simply move the atv ahead a couple feet and continue. This year,i made a new taller and ruggeder pusher,so i can split two halved peices again at once.Ibelieve i finally have perfected my design the way i want. Most of the materials for the frame are scraps from work etc.SO i dont have alot in it.It will split most any thing.I can split through about a cord an hour in good wood, its very fast,I would recomend NHS two stage pumps.I have towed it behind my jeep and hauls nice[just remember to put sandwich bag unde hydro tank vent cap:D :D ]Its a nice splitter to get around in the woods with my atv.In pic 5 you will notice an axe on board. The wedge only comes within 1 inch of the wedge.99.9% of the time the angles ,beyond the wedge force the peice open ,but every now and then ill get one little bit hanging. I also have killed alot of snakes under the wood with it:D :D onThought id show it to you and the design, and reasoning for it.There is another pic in another thread here,i never used a cutting torch, its all grinders, sawzalls and welder.ENJOY
ALAN

Thanks for sharing the pics. I always enjoy looking at others ideas. Looks like a very useable splitter!!! I recently built a 3pt PTO splitter. Nothing beats a good splitter!!!

Iought to be on my sled.:) We got 17 inches of wet heavy snow over night.I got up at 4 and plowed the drive, and headed for work. The commute was so bad with zero visibility,i turned back 15 miles out.Used a saved vacation day for today:D .I waited until 2 for it to stop snowing[thats why i was on here] then got out the bota and cleaned up.WHAT A MESS,HALF DIRT HALF SNOW IN THE BANKINGS:( hAD FUN ON THE TRACTOR THOUGH,WHAT BETTER FUN ON A SNOW DAY:) BTW one of the threads on tbn was how deep of snow can you drive through? 17 inches,is what i backed through up my tractor road to the main drive.Had to swipe the hoe back and forth a few times on the steepest part:p :p That was about the limit of this heavy stuff for my little BOTA.Didnt want to plow this road cause it was real soft under neath. How much did you guys get in NH and VERMONT?

Have you ever wondered if you had a wood splitting problem? I have..and I can't lick it alone...here are some things I have tried.
Splitting pine only, limiting the number of logs I split, never splitting alone, never splitting in the morning, splitting only at home, never splitting in the house, never splitting during business hours, splitting only at parties, switching from oak to cottonwood, splitting only natural pines, agreeing to resign if ever caught splitting on the job, taking a trip, not taking a trip, swearing off splitting forever (with and without a solemn oath), taking more physical exercise, reading inspirational books, going to health farms and sanitariums, accepting voluntary commitment to asylums-we could increase the list ad infinitum.

And don't let anyone try to fool you...splitting WILL lead to the hard stuff!!!...
like lathes and band saws.
