Tractor
Massey Ferguson 1030
spoke to the M-F dealer about hydraulic oil, he told me if the tractor has "wet" brakes I should use Massey oil, if the brakes are "dry" I can use generic hydraulic oil.
which type brakes does this little gem have?
would like to use cheaper generic oil and save 40+ mile trip to the dealer if possible.

now an unrelated question- is there a special technique to checking air pressure and adding air to fluid-filled rear tires?
I tried to check pressure with the valve stem at the top of its rotation and got a little spray of liquid......

To the forum from Northwest Alabama. Normally you check the pressure with the valve at the top. What do you mean by little spray? If it was jut a few drops then that is fine but if it was a stream, then that is not normal.

I think there are several members here who can speak to using alternative hydraulic fluid. It just needs to meet the specs for your tractor, which you can find in the owner's manual. I think from reading your other thread you do not yet have a manual. Obviously Permatran III will meet your specs. My Massey dealer calls it liquid gold. And it probably is just that to his bottom line!

it should have wet brakes. My 1986 1040 has wet brakes( that was one of the many reasons I chose it to buy over JD, Kubota,Case, and others at the time. The MF1040 was just beefier built. I have the shop manual for mine( it covers the 1010,1020,1030, and 1040 models)

on the amount of hydraulic fluid.......when i changed mine.....was the largest mess i have ever made in my garage. I had 2 five gallon buckets ready....NOT ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!! that day cost me a lot on the stupid tax. It will be a LONG time before i forget that day! IF i remember right, I went with tractor supply for the hydrolic oil as it met the requirments that massey specified back in 1986 and
I believe i changed the oil 12 to 15 years ago. that tractor has had no problems except for needing 2 batterys over the years

the Massey dealer wanted $97 per 5 gal, so I went back to TSC and got equivalent oil for $40.
it took 9 gallons to fill but the 3-point lift works perfect now.......

calling it a "dealer" is being kind. It was actually a CarQuest auto parts store that had about 10 new tractors of various sizes out front, but no meaningful parts inventory or service dept.......
