Got a 4210 with 420FEL, and will be doing some clearing this fall, mostly 3-5" Dogwoods, and saplings. Been reading with a lot of interest about treegetters, and thought I'd try the loader first to see if it was strong enough before buying/building a treegetter. I chained onto a 4" dogwood (ground not dry, but not wet either). Well, it wasnt strong enough to lift out.

Subsequent searches here indicated I needed to have used the curl function instead of just lifting the loader, the curl has more of a mechanical advantage. I will be trying this this weekend and see.

So my question is, is my combo too undersized to do what I would like to do? Will a shim kit give the umph I need (also been reading up on shim kit posts) to use a treegetter on my FEL?

Is yours an early or late 4210? The late ones had beefier hydraulics.

The curl will hopefully do the job. If you are pulling the rear tires offf the ground, then you need more rear ballast. if they are staying down, then shimming is your nest step.

Be careful that you stay centered on the loader so that you don't tweak it cockeyed...

Dont know, how would I tell? I bought it used last fall.

The rear tears are not coming off the ground. Maybe cause I have them filled with water/AF?

Already got the loader centered thing, can get ugly otherwise.

Rocky, do you know how the later 4120's were improved? My bucket seems pretty wimpy to me and I would like to know what they did to change things.

I am going from memory, subject to verificatin, blah blah...

Originally the 4210 was a pretty significant step down from the 4310. It had lower Hp, smaller wheelbase and lower hydraulic pump output. Sometime after '02 they beefed up the pump, maybe almost to the 4310/4410 unit. If I get real bored I will dig into JDParts to see if it is athe same pump.

JD learned from the 4210 and now all the machines in a class share far more componants, with little more than Hp to differentiate them.
