Winter days can get to be boring and one's mind can due some wandering. Was working on my recently acquired Satoh Bison and noticed something which struck me a little odd.

I noticed that down near the bottum (base) of the block just above where the pan bolts on, in the lower reccesses the red paint was absent and a white chalky substance was present. This material looked similar to plaster of paris. This same material was also present coming from under plastic insert caps which look like they're covering up what appears to be factory machined and possibly threaded holes or passages on various locations on the engine block. OK, take a breath after that last one.

My questions:
Does anybody know if possibly this may have been done in the Mazda factory to clean up the appearencce of the engine block? Maybe just a cosmetic procedure? Has anyone else noticed the same condition?

Eventualy I would like to primp this baby up, new paint, decals and make it shine, but I don't want to start digging this stuff out of there if indeed it is supposed to be there.

Also will throw this into the mix just to cloud things up a little more. This tractor originaly was sold in Texas. I purchased it in Oklahoma. I hauled it home to Wisconsin. I , being a northern boy and not knowing any better am also pondering another possibility. Is it possible that this could be a build up of alkaly?

Okay now that you've had enough time to pull yourself up off of the floor from laughing so hard...
Would like to hear your comments on this "white powdery substance"?

Thanks in advance for your time and interest.

Same thing here in NC. I think it is done by an insect. Some of my threaded holes that were open now have that white stuff in them.

The threaded holes that are not used in mine have plugs in them. To keep them clean of bugs and dirt for future use if needed i always thought. As far as the white cakey stuff...bug poop sounds good to me. Any possability it could be dryed up antifreeze cake?

On mine, it couldn't be antifreeze cake, it is on the back of the rear case.

Looked again closer as to if this could be bug crap. I would have to believe that is not. On the engine block (base area) it is too evenly spread in a wide area resembleling the consistency/composition of dried plaster of paris. It does have the taste of chalk and looks very similar. As for the capped holes... Where the plastic caps are still in place, looks as though they may have drawn moisture and started swelling and oozeing from behind the caps.
On the side of the rear end housing looks as though these caps could have gotten brittle with age and fell away. However the drilled/bored holes remain completely full with the white mix.
The red paint on the block area seems to end where this "stuff" begins as if it were actualy paintd over originaly.
As to the reference of it possibly being antifreeze cake, I would have to agree with oliver28472 some of this being on the rear end would be no where near the location of any antifreeze.
At this point I would have a tendency to believe this was apllied during manufacturing at the factory.

In this time of modern social communication maybe someone could connect with an individual who may have worked at the Satoh Agricultural Machine Mfg. Co., LTD factory in the early 70's or so. This person could maybe answer this question and possibly give us more interesting useless information.

Just a thought.
