I also wire trailers and trucks all the time, probably 100 per year in my marine business. Everything we sell is 4 flat or 7 round. The 7 round is our primary used plug due to the trailers have surge brakes. We need the reverse light signal from the tow vehicle to activate a brake cut out valve in the hydraulic line going from the actuator to the brakes themselves.

End result, don't waste your money or time putting anything other than 7 round on your tow vehicle. This will cover future needs and is the industry standard.

The 7 way with round pin is mostly found on large tractor trailers. Most of the small stuff is the 7 way RV blade type.

Yep.. allt he trucks that are pre-wired now have the 7 blade connector.. some have a 4-wire flat as well.. or give you the adapter. All my agg equipment uses the 6 pole plugs.. thus I have to use adapters depending what truck I'm using... My only gripe about the 7 pole plug is that there is 2 wire diagrams for it.. one works with electric brakes out ofthe box.. one don't. Every time I buy a 7to6 adapter i have to check it to make sur ehte brake and power line are correct or need to be swapped. If it was a 'real' standard.. there would only be one diagram for it... just like there is for 4, 5, and 6... go figure..

In 35+ years of towing I've never encountered a variation in the 7 way but have been bitten by the 6 way variation several times.

I think you have that backwards It is the 6 pin that has two "standards".

Sorry.. there ARE (2) 7 pin standards.. this has been discussed -many- times before.

Bigger trucks.. and 'regualr' trucks.

That's beside the point of the 6pin needing wires swapped.

Seems that the RV standard is used when the recepticle is on the tow unit and the round pin when the recepticle in on the trailer. As you said "regular and bigger"

I have that same connector on my JD5420. Check the owner's manual and you will most likely find the pin assignments don't match any trailer standard you've ever seen.
