Most efficient way to burn wood

Oh and to add to that I would be in a centrally located room, no vaulted ceilings and have an open floor plan. I would have It on a hearth and a free stander.

Vaulted ceilings are a plus with wood heat if you have a ceiling fan. We have 9 ' ceilinngs and we run our fan pulling up to keep the heat even in the room. If we over heat the room we turn the fan off. The heat rises and comfortable temps return in 15 mins. When things cool a bit we turn the fan back on and fix the temp quick with the hot air from the ceiling while the fire catches up.

We have a heat pump and sometimes use the gas fireplace. The room has a high ceiling and running the ceiling fan reversed helps.

See your point but when its cold you have to heat all that space and your heat rises up when you want it low. When I get hot I just open a window!! been there done that, sleeping in the bedroom at the far end of the house from stove with it 30F outside. Window open half the night, no other heat in the house but stove.
