I have a 100 gal diesel tank for my farm i use in my truck. I have a buddy that got a 200 gal tank he wants to use to bring aviation fuel to the farm for his helo. Talking with on of my buddies he was saying a local farmer went and got a 275 gal tote of def fluid and was brining it back to his farm and the DOT got him and wrote him up. I can't find anything online about what the max amount of fluid you can haul without needed and endorsement. Thoughts ??

I don't think that the 275 gallon plastic tote meets hazmat transportatio regs.

IBC Totes (plastic in metal cage) are usually 300, but if the product was truly 275 gallons then that is ~2200 pounds of liquid. Was he cited for lack of a placard? Hazmat placards are required if transporting a hazardous material in a bulk vessel holding more than 119 gallons. Yes, I know that DEF is not haz-mat. I would suspect he was cited for improperly securing a load and/or overweight (without knowing the model of the truck)

And the law is different between "residential" use and "ag" use. If I'm hauling diesel on an ag licensed trailer with an ag licensed truck, I can haul a lot more fuel than without the ag license, in Texas anyway.

I sure hope your buddy is aware of the issues of storing aviation fuel to prevent contamination.
Having tractor, or automobile fuel storage issues is insignificant.
Having issues with home storage of aviation fuel can be deadly,..... as in crash!
Flying over to the local FBO to fill up, is usually a much better idea.

120 gal is the limit in California.

IBC totes are usually 275 gallons. 330 gallon aren't quite as common but still plentiful. Intermediate bulk container - Wikipedia

The magic number for hasmat is some non-round number just over 100 gallons, probably that 119 mark. Makes the funky size at or just shy of that limit for some transfer tanks you see make more sense.

There can be local codes as well. In MA, aux transfer tanks over 30 (?) gallons have to be permitted by the local fire department and inspected annually. They are also limited to 100 gallons I believe. And the any transfer tanks may be limits on certain routes (ie transfer tanks are not allowed in the tunnels in Boston).
