Hi. I'm new here, so forgive me if I make mistakes:)
I have a JD 24T baler that I want to haul with my old 58 ford tractor. The ford does not have a PTO so I want to put a motor on the baler. What hp do I need to make it work? Any small engine or do I need to be specific? Any help would be wonderful... Thanks in advance.......

You'll need a Vtwin at least 20 horsepower and I think there is already a V belt groove in the flywheel. International used a Wisconsin twin on some of their old balers.

Take a look at how the Amish do it. They use a gas engine to power their square balers. Not fun for me, it's business. It really don't take a lot of power to spin a square baler, the flywheel provides the inertia to push the plunger and pack the hay. other than compression of the plunger, the baler is really coasting along.

I rarely handle it, I have a regular crew that handles/stacks and loads bales. I help out ocassionally but mostly I run the machinery and write the checks.

We have around 7000 bales in the barns right now with more coming. I haven't ran rounds yet but will next week when my new NH rollbelt shows up. I wore out the old one.

I like to 'sit on it' until about December and then sell it but I have the room. Nice offseason income.

I've got an old JD 24T baler (that works great so far), but mine is the normal PTO version. I have no idea if it would help you, but I've got the owners and parts manuals that show the configuration of the original Wisconsin engine that was mounted on it. I can scan in the pages and email them to you if you think it would help.

Good luck and take care.

Something like an air-cooled 20-25 hp Wisconsin engine is generally used. Double or triple C-size V-belts between the engine output shaft and the baler flywheel.

Google "baler Wisconsin engine" and look at the images--there are dozens of photos showing how it's done.

Good luck.
