Just recently purchased 1720 cub. Noticed oil was overfilled. Also when checking out, also noticed oil in air filter. Was this problem caused by too much oil in motor, or do I have more serious problem. Theres a tube that runs off motor to breather, and im sure thats the only place that it came from. would like some help if its different prob than too much oil. Want to replace filter but want to make sure problem is fixed first.

I had a similar problem on my 1872. I had a fuel pump failure that resulted in gas geting into the crankcase, When it got real warm and the oil heated up, it pushed into the breather and would actually flood the engine. Some of the details are fuzzy, it was a long tme ago. I ran the tractor a short time with the breather disconnected to verify that was the problem. I them changed the oil and rebuilt the fuel pump. Everything worked normal after that. The extra volume in the crackcase allowed it to push the oil/gas mix into the breather. Just checking the oil level should have been my first clue but I knew I hadn't added oil...

I believe the oil overfill is the culprit.

Steve, overfilling the engine oil will most definately result in oil blowing out the crankcase breather, soaking the breather element and/or air filter and housing. Vertical shaft engines are more suceptable to this, but it can be done on horizontal shaft GT engines as well.
