Gravely 16 G series Professonial
I have a Gravely 16hp Pro G series model 47578, The manual Calls for 10w30 motor oil to be placed in the transmission and A friend said that Trans fluid type F would be a better choice. I was wondering if anyone here had any thoughts on which would be better?

Thanks in advance
Josiah

I have a lot of knowledgable friends, but probably none of them Know better what to put in that gravely Transmission then the Gravely folks that wrote that book.

I sometimes look for subs when something is real hard to find, or unusual or does not seem to work, but I just don't see that being the case on what you are talking about.

Go with the manual.

I used 10w30 in the transmission of my Gravely.

ATF is only 5w, too light.

Having run Fords for most of my life, 10W-30 oil will be much easier to find than Type F....and has already been stated is much thinner than than 10W-30. BobG in VA

Hi! I have two Gravely. On old L model Gravely Motor and Transmission use the same oil 10-30 . Later with Hohler engines . Engine and transmission can use two kind of oil. one for engine other for tranny. For me! now I Use 15-45 diesel oil for my engine and UDT oil or Hydrostatique For transmission run good in summer. In winter ATF could be a better choice. Because if oil too thick or heavy (The tractor can be moving when cold) In Gravely tranny they are Bands and planetary gears as automatic transmission. Gravely recommand 10-30 motor oil because they are never trouble with this one in the transmission. Gravely are very reliable. Good Luck Oldmech

In my Gravely, I used 10w-30 dino oil in the transmission and 15w-50 synthetic in the engine. The 15w-50 Mobil 1 is exactly what I used. After about the 3rd change, it stopped using oil. I might have been able to go with a lower vis oil then, but up to that 3rd oil change with synthetic, it was still using and smoking blue on startup. About that time, I got my JD 4010 and sold the Gravely.

It would be better to use 5w-30 dino oil if you can find any, the lower the first number the less gear resistance in cold weather. I'd be leary of using synthetic oil. It's probably too slick for the synchros, etc. to work properly in the transmission. Mobil 1 offers a 0w-30 now, for instance, but you can't get a dino oil like this.

Changing the transmission oil, stopped my left axle seal leak almost entirely. I disturbed it (I guess) when I put the wheel brakes on it and started it leaking. The oil change almost stopped it (e.g. reswelled the seals).

Hi! Important ! NEVER USE 85-90 W GEAR OIL in transmission on Gravely. This heavy oil cannot lubricate the two fiber bands (very expansive to replace) clutchs of planetary and a lot of heat destroy or burn the bands. Good 10w-30 motor oil is a good choice. In winter May be ATF oil. The Old L model Gravely as mine have all steel bands. Good Luck ! Oldmech
