Motorcraft oil filters?

Changed the oil in my daughters car a few days ago and the motorcraft oil filter had some gasket material inside coming loose. It was bright orange and round like and o ring and it was loose where the filter spins on. I would think this happened when it was removed. For reference this is the hole in the center of the filter and about half of it was loose and falling into the hole.

Are Motorcraft filters decent? Was this even a problem?

It probably ripped apart sometime during use. No telling when

The orange flat ring you can see around the rim (through the outer holes) is the anti-siphon system, it's there to minimize oil flowing backwards out the filter when the engine is off (may or may not be an issue depending on the engine). I see that some of it is missing when looking through the bottom hole.

I have no idea what the orange stuff in the middle is unless there was a manufacturing defect and an extra anti-siphon ring got jammed in there somehow.

Either way, this doesn't look right at all.

Looking at the picture of the one taken apart I can’t wrap my mind around it either unless part of the orange tore loose.

Now that I know what I’m looking at I agree. My gut reaction is it didn’t hurt anything but it’s not a good thing either. My guess is defective when it was made.

I have run Motor Craft oil filters for about 35 years and have never had a problem but like any thing else I’m sure a few bad ones make it to store shelves.

I'm another fan of Motorcraft filters. I have em on all my Fords and even matched them up on my Backhoe and diesel generator. Wish I could find a cross for my JD. Never seen one do that.
