I have a good working Mott 48 square gear box, right side drive flail mower. I am looking for a replacement PTO shaft. I only need the rear half but could use the entire shaft. Does anyone have a source for these? Or, do you have a cross over part number to a standard part? I have tried various suppliers and no one has a clue. Thanks

Hello gbart14,

If I remember the process on these you can cut both ends of a longer PTO shaft to
obtain the correct length needed for the male and female halves.

There are quite few posts and uploaded diagrams for finding the correct geometry for a
PTO shaft to correctly measure the correct length on both halves so that when you raise that
beautiful flail mower all the way up the PTO shaft does not bend and cause the stub shaft on
the mule and its mounting flange to be broken.

There are a lot of folks that sell complete PTO shafts but its better to be ready to give the
correct measurements for the distance between the end of the stub shaft on the mule to
the end of the stub shaft on the gear box on the mower with the mower fully elevated
which is shortest length of the retracted PTO shaft.
The fully extended working length at ground level to assure that the male end does not
pull out of the female end of the PTO shaft.

there are a bunch of resellers of pto shafts and parts.

If you take the shaft half to a local farm equipment dealer if a tractor supply is not nearby
you can try there first as you MUST HAVE the correct measurements for the mower fully
raised and lowered measuring from the end of the PTO shafts.

if you have nylon twine and a helper you can obtain the lengths of nylon twine and cut each
one to have the extended length and the compressed length of the pto shaft.

It may be faster to call agrisupply and ask them what PTO Shaft is used for the caroni 48 inch
rototiller and flail mower and you can be assured of the correct length one to order or buy locally
through a local supplier.

You may have to cut a little off the male end but you will not know how much to cut off until you
have the complete shaft on hand to assure the PTO shaft will not bind up and cause damage to the
gearbox or the mules PTO shaft and mounting flange.

Hello, Leon, thanks for your reply. I have learned a lot today. I have scoured those sources and others today and talked to anyone who would call me back. I was hoping to find one in stock somewhere. No luck but Drive Train America was recommended to me by one of the people I called. They sell the parts and they are part of Sadler Power Train in Iowa. Sadler can make the entire shaft for me. I decided to take the shaft to Drive Line Services here in Portland, OR and they will fit up new joints and yokes but will take 2 weeks or more. Guess I will have to wait. FYI, the length from end of PTO to beginning of input shaft on my Mott 48 is 23". Spline on my tractor (Yanmar 135D) is 1 3/8" - 6 spline and the spline on the input end at the Mott 48 is 1" - 15 spline.

I will now look into the Caroni. Did not know about them.

Thanks, again. Will report back any other findings.

Hello gbart14,

So you have a mule with a 750-1000 RPM PTO shaft eh?

You might want to ask the driveline folks about buying a 15 to 6 spline adapter that can slip over the stub shaft on the mule

I am not sure about the eurocardan PTO shafts that agrisupply sells but if you ask for Rodney Barbour and tell him I sent you he will be able to tell you right off if he has the driveline parts for the PTO Shaft that you need.

Leon, sorry, did not thank you for the info. Thanks. Portland Drive Line Specialties was way overboard with pricing so I am going with Sadler Power Train in Iowa. Drive Line also advised against the 15 to 6 spline adapter because of the very short length. Sadler hustled up a price for me.

No worries gbart14,

as long as they take care of you that is all that matters.
Now you have the use of that beautiful flail mower.

Happy mowing my friend
