I have a mott 72 finish mower flail with the short knives with clips and d-rings. mott also has a longer knife that appears to hook directly to the cutter shaft. Is there an advantage to either configuration the clips and d-ring configuration just seems to me like a whole mess of parts that don't do much.

I'd love to find a substitute for the clips and D- rings. Always lose 5-10 knife stations a year, and that's only maybe a dozen hours mowing on not-rough ground. Just waiting for someone else to try it first! I have an SHD88, so 216 knives, I think. Anyone changed styles? Jim

My Value Line flail uses hex head bolts and lock nuts to fasten the knives to the drum. Seems to work reliably.

Good luck

I just realized the holes are not the same size on the tall side slicers versus the short ones with the d-rings and they are probably about the same thickness as the clips so they would be too tight to swing properly on the cutting station lugs and would probably get bent.

Yeah, it's really set up different, too bad. No guarantee the long ones would swing between two lugs on the drum. Plus nearly $300 to convert and no promise it would work, even drilling out the blade holes. Darn it, I really like the idea of cotter pins rather than the complicated system mine uses.

I'm pretty sure the two knives are thinner than the two clips but they may not swing well once a few of them get bent.

I got the cutter shaft off my mower and I was removing a few damaged knives and I noticed that the clips have a tendency to crack just above the d-ring mount on the side that is facing the other clip. maybe that is why you keep losing knife stations. the clips are only .30$ so 55 bucks to do all 92 stations on my 72.

the problem I've got is how to get the old ones back on are they supposed to be tight in the lug slot. It makes it hard to align the bolt holes.
