The whole White mountain area is awesome.

Yep - it is nice up in the mountians there. I like the Mt Washington for the peaks but one of my favorite places is the Balsams in Dixville Notch.

The golf course on the top of the mountian is great as well - see Maine, VT and Canada..

Its a bit of a hike to get there tho..

Take a ride on The Cog Railway if you're into steam, especially if the weather is clear up top.

+1 But I think ya got to go early in the AM for steam. I was saddened to see diesel/hyd loco's last year. The road is cool too, esp on a Harley!

I love that area and hike Mt. Washington (4.5 miles) every year with friends and family. I've never stayed at the Mt. Washington resort believe it or not but have heard it's amazing and dinner is a black tie only event. The Cog railroad is a fantastic ride and I prefer the steam to the diesel but anything's better than the coal train which covers you in black soot. :D
The golfing is great as well. The golf carts have GPS and LCD TV's that show you the hole your at, distance to the hole and current weather conditions.

Thanks for the replies,
I've been up to this area on short vacations for the last 4 years. The Mt Washington is a historic hotel that was designed for the wealthy. Today it is very casual, there still is a black tie only dining room but most of the rest of the place is very easy going. Not cheap but not snooty at all.

Have not gone on the cog train but have been to the station and have seen that black plume from miles away in past years, but not this year yet, they were still burning coal last year. Love that smell.

I have driven up the auto road, that's an adventure in itself, you can freeze your butt off in the summer up there sometimes.

Someone told me Mt Washington was one of the deadliest mountains in the world ?? I have not checked that on google though.

I have been to the Balsams last year. All these "notch" roads are incredible,
That Dixville notch road feels like your driving off a cliff when your driving north thru it, My daughter screamed and scared me more than the road dropping off.

Last night looking for moose, a cloud came in and settled in the crawford notch, couldn't see the road!!
