Mower deck blades reinstall on 48\" mower....

Does it matter what direction each blade is in relationship to each other?? I just removed and sharpened my blades and did not really pay much attention to the "pattern" of the blades(3). I'm guessing that there is probably a more beneficial pattern to reinstall the blades as compare to perhaps a unform pattern?? Have not had a chance to cut yet with them but I want to maintain the mulching that I have had with the deck. This was done during my 1st 50 hours maintenance routine...I also removed the cover to the deck and tightened down some nuts/bolts that were somewhat loose. There was a fair amount of grass under the belts....has anybody come up with a way to keep the grass out of there? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

great question the best way to keep out the grass is not to cut the grass ......... just kidding ya but i do like both questions as i have just bought the 60 '' mower and removed the cover and had to also tighten the bolt on the right spindle my self and while doing i moved the blade position from where it was when i got it so i too would like to know that answer as well

Re: Mower deck blades reinstall on 48\" mower....

The last time I sharpened my blades I decided to set the blades the way Honda recommends for their 3 blade deck..
The outboard blades perpendicular to the center blade. After mowing checked the blades all in different positions. I'm guessing it doesn't make any difference.

The belts on the mower are not timing belts. Timing belt are notched as well as the pulleys. It makes no difference as to where you position the blades on you mower when you install them as it will change upon running them anyway.

That makes sense to much(and is what I had suspected)...now if I can keep the grass from out of the pulley covers!

Yes the pulley covers. That is a problem. Just have to keep removing them or use duct tap. I have a question. On the center pulley of my 48 inch mower it only has a bolt in it. There is no cup or flat u shape bracket as the two outside ones have. I bought my 422 used and am wondering if may be it has been removed? Thanks guys.

Although I don't have a PT, I had the same problem with the covers not keeping grass out. I put some foam rubber weather striping around the perimiter and the cover now has to compress that foam when it's screwed on. It seals out the grass pretty good, somehow some seems to make it around the pulley spindle and into the belt area, but after a season the amount that gets in is olnly a handfull and not packed like it use to be. The seals have to be replaced every couple years, but that's not a big deal or expense.

A good idea, problem with the PT is that the covers(left and right side) do not meet...and the gap between them is considerable. Not sure why the design is this way.

Re: Mower deck blades reinstall on 48\" mower....

I use my leaf blower to clear the clippings and dust off the tractor after each use, so I was thinking of opening up a slot in several places around the bottom edge of the mower deck pulley covers and then just using my leaf blower to clear it out. Should work. Maybe one on each end would be enough. Only about a half an inch high by 3 or 4 inches wide should do it.
