I just purchased a used cub cadet 2140. It runs very well but the mower deck will not raise very high and if I try to drop it the deck is on the ground by the time I reach "3" on the indicator. I don't have the owners manual so I need to know if this can be adjusted? Also, is there anywhere I can get an owners manual? Thanks. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

You can go to cub cadet web site and select customer services then frequently asked questions. There is a Q&A that address access to manuels. With your model and serial no you can download a PDF file with the manual.

thank you. I found the manual and I am printing it off now. Now maybe I can figure out how to get the deck a little higher. Thanks again /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Chances are the anti-scalp wheels are adjusted to a point where they hit the ground first. Mine is this way, but on purpose. I always mow at 5 or 6, so I have them set to avoid overcutting in bumpy areas.

I can't push my deck down further than the 3 setting due to this. Nor would I want to... If you do adjust the wheels, be sure they aren't in constant contact with the ground, or you will wear them out prematurely. They should only touch the ground when they are needed for antiscalp.

Thanks for the reply I went out and checked the wheels and they were set a little low. I set the wheels up as high as they would go and the deck now sets flat on the ground at "2". It just seems to me the deck should hang higher than that. I looked through the owners manual and it tells how to level the deck and remove/install it but it doesn't say anything about how to raise it.

I don't think you can change that part, but maybe you can.

I remember the lift lever being tied directly to one lift side. The other side has a threaded rod with nuts on either side to allow you to level the deck side-to-side. The front is leveled by that u-shaped bar that attaches between the front wheels.

Maybe there is an adjustment on the lift lever side and I didn't notice it. I think my LT-2042 mows at about 3 1/2 or 4 inches in the full up (6) position.

Another thing that directly affects all this is the tire pressure.

If I keep it on "6" it sits almost 2.75 inches so I can mow the main lawn with it, but I like the deck a bit higher for traveling and mowing the back section where the grand kids play (about 1.5 acres). Thanks for all the help. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I have a 3xxx series tractor and large series deck. I'm also not too happy with the limited travel range of the deck lift. I know the numbers for the lift are just that, numbers and not inches. With the level I've set the wheels, the deck is sitting on the ground at 3 and full up is just a little over 5. When raised linkage is up against the frame. I also wish that in FULL UP position the deck was several inched higher.

Thank you for the info. I was looking at this 2140 and where the handle goes through the fender and attaches to the lift rod for the deck there is about a 3" slot there. Now the handle bolt is at the top of the slot but if you push up on the deck the slot moves up. What would happen if part of the slot were plugged forcing the deck to hang higher?

Not sure if I understand your description or not. On my machine, the left lift rod there is a bracket with a slot about the size you mention. This is a requirement to get the lift hardware out of the way of the mower gear box for when the deck is removed. It is also the same lift rod that is adj for leveling the deck left/right.

Hey Rhoderman,

You said to adjust the wheels so that they only touch when trying to avoid scalping? Is that correct?
I've got my deck on my 1046 set on the lowest height setting (I've got Bermuda grass) and the anti scalp wheels are always touching. Is that wrong?
thanks.

Sorry to take so long to get back to you. Too many things on the burner. I looked again at that rod and you are right. There is no way I can plug that slot.
I took some pictures and brought them to the cub dealer here. He said the deck should definitely hang higher and said I should bring it in to see if something is worn or out of alignment somewhere. He said it may be something as simple as the deck not being mounted correctly the last time it was taken off. I think that might be my best bet. I don't want to mess with it too much and wind up needing some major repair.
Thanks for all your input /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

It's ok for the deck wheels to contact the ground on uneven spots, but you dont want the deck to ride & bounce around on the ground all the time. Suspended decks wont take the beating.
G/luck

Anthony,
JTKub is right. I missed page 2 of this thread...

It even says in the owner's manual not to let the wheels touch the ground all the time.

My old mower had wheels and rollers that ran on the ground all the time. This one only touches when I hit certain bumps. It seems to mow just as good if not better than my old mower.

Well, it looks like I'm off to the barn for some adjusting /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Thanks for the pointer.
