Calling all creative minds !!! How easy/ difficult is it to convert a side-discharge mower deck to a rear discharge? For many years I had a rear discharge Wheelhorse, and I foolishly sold it. I replaced it with a side discharge Craftsman, and now realize I must go back to the rear. I mow between rows of Christmas trees, and the grass blown to the side is much more of a problem than I had anticipated.

Conversion of a mower deck involves not only the cutting and welding, but the air flow patterns created by the whirling blades. The cutting and welding is happy time for me, but I don't want to invest the effort if, in the end, it doesn't cut and discharge grass correctly. Any thoughts ??

I too liked my rear discharge WheelHorse mower deck. It was a '68 model, and I sold it in '86. But the new owner is still mowing grass with it. :)

Problem to convert is that the blades counter-rotated and that feature is likely why it worked as well as it did. If you figure out a way to cut out the rear of the deck, counter-rotate the blades (get the right blade for the right side), and plug the discharge chute the you should be good to go.

We will be interested in pics of the procedure or ideas on the new design.

My WH rear discharge deck was three blades, and they all turned clockwise, as you look down on the deck. My Craftsman side discharge is also three blades, all turning clockwise. Neither of these decks have a chute or trough molded into the top, but the WH deck has vertical baffles around the front of the blades, much like a fan shroud on an automobile engine. Waiting for more more opinions

The air volume is created by the spinning blades and is looking for a way to get out. Block the side and open the back, and beef up the sides of the outlet. You also run the risk of throwing stuff into your tires. Add a rubber flap.
