Mowing Mower PTO seal

I was mowing longer grass today and the PTO shaft popped off because grass wrapped around it. After I cleaned everything up I noticed the seal around the PTO was leaking. Anyone have this problem?

John, welcome! Can you elaborate a bit more? Seal on the mower? Tractor? If mower, my seal went out on the blade side of a shredder after only 3 months. I filled the gearbox with grease and have been using it ever since with no problems. That was about 18 years ago.
