Mowing with my ATV

I live on 5 acres, of which 1.5 was seeded last fall. With the weather turning warmer, I'll need to start mowing it soon.

I currently use my Yamaha Wolverine to tow a brushcutter (swisher 44" trailcutter) and am pleased with how this takes care of the rough stuff. I was thinking of getting a finish cut mower to tow behind the ATV for my lawn, but I've heard that the combination of a locked differential and non-turf tires will tear up the grass when I turn.

Anyone have any experiences or opinions they'd like to share?

I replied in your other thread but will post here for others who may be looking in this forum.

I have had both the pull and push type mowers for an ATV. Although older and probably not as good as a Swisher, I honestly didn't care for either.

The ATV itself will do some damage for the reasons you've mentioned unless all the turns are done very wide.

For both the pull and push type mowers, navigation around "things" (be it trees, buildings...) wasn't as close as I'd like. There was a lot of use with a weedeater when done.

On the push type, it also became more difficult to steer.

Since you already have the trailcutter, why not try it once on your yard just to see how it goes. It may not generate the finish you would want but it would give you an opportunity to see how the setup would work.

The rear tires will scuff and tear up grass in a lawn. Another concern is that with the slow speeds you must travel when mowing, engine heat becomes an issue. More heat means shorter life. This is more of a problem for air-cooled engines that it would be for liquid-cooled.

Larry, I agree with both previous posters, Finish mowing with an ATV is a BAD IDEA! Unless you like reseeding as you mow. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Atv's with there live axles just tear up grass on every turn.
