MS 2010 OFFICE PRO ?

Got a new Toshiba laptop recently, of course it had no software at all, to keep the price down I guess.

Well it did have a low version of office 2010 as a trial, but someone gave me a trial version of Pro Plus. This is the whole premium suite with all the bells and whistles. After 30 days I started getting a message that the software needs to be activated, and a red bar would come across the top of the screen.

That was 3 months ago, all I do is close the message box and everything keeps working, I can't see any slow down or restrictions.
The red bar is still at the top but not when documents are printed or faxed or saved etc.

Anyone have a clue what I should expect? how long it will keep working for.

I do not know how long it will last....

Do your self and your pocket book a favor and go down load Open Office. It is free, does everything I need, and does not put more money in Bill's pocket. I think I have been using Open Office for 10 years or so on Windows and even Solaris.

I was going to suggest the same thing, but realize that documents saved in other versions will need to be saved in the open office format. Wife deals with 2007 Office and just upgraded to 2010 Office at work and has a lot of problems accessing work files on her laptop at the house with open office. I just located her a legal copy of 2007 to put on her laptop at home so she will quit complaining about it. A friend with lots more experience in Office suggested the open office and stands firm on the fact that if she would give open office a chance, she would be able to do everything she needs to with it, but she just doesn't care, she wants it fixed asap, lol.

Open Office is really good. It converts MS docs well. I used it recently to integrate photos and text to describe the work needed on a nonprofit house rehab project, and was very, very pleased with how easy it was to work with. :thumbsup:

I'm sure OO has it's good points, as I see a lot of people supporting it. One of the things I use and need in Office is Access. When I looked a couple years ago I could not get my Access databases to work in OO.

Does Open Office have Power Point, Excel and Publisher? I don't use that stuff but my kids need it for school.

When installing O.O., the first thing most folks do is change the settings to always save everything in the MS Word, Excell, PowerPoint extensions format. End of issues in sending out documents in .swx or other such strange extensions.

Many school systems employ Open Office because of monetary crunches.
Yes, Open Office has Word, Excel, PowerPoint fac similies.
Unless one is a professional or has deep pockets, it seems strange to me that people would spend the money on MS Office. Better things to do with the money. Open Office has far, far more capability and power than most people will ever, ever use or need.

Just for the record, I don't use Office much, so it is all greek to me. I just know the wife has a lot of incoming and outgoing emails that contain Office related data, and her work computer automatically saves them, with no problem. However, if she tries to access one of those files from the house, she has to save another copy of it in Open Office style of format for some reason. Maybe her settings aren't right, but I think the mindset she has will be solved when the new disc arrives, giving her what she wanted in the first place. Remember the old saying, "Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up"? That might be why I am getting her another Office disc, lol.

Microsoft purchased the open source company in 2006, I think?; it's surprising Gates has kept it open source and thus a free version. I believe OpenOffice was originally funded by Sun Microsystems.

It was originally written by a German company, bought out by Sun Microsystems who are now part of Oracle Corporation. No MS involvement.

I used OO to help son with his homework - a newspaper article - it set up columns superbly and IMHO more easily them MSO - esp with those awful ribbons MSO now uses.

Open Office does Power Point and has a spreadsheet aka Excel. I do not know about Publisher since I do not know what it is. :laughing:

Our county is going through an uproar partly over money but the head of the schools seems to be either incompetent or lying. Last year I found out they were buying Mac laptops for kids to take home. It is very debatable on how much of an increase in education a take home laptop will provide but to buy an expensive closed hardware and software system is inexcusable. The schools are having a $4 million shortfall. The contract on the Macs was about $650,000. They could have gotten good quality laptops running Linux for a third of the cost of the Macs.

When the contract was up for renewal I sent a note to the powers that be with a cost breakdown on brand name laptops which fell on deaf ears. Some of the board of education were voted out. But the people voted in some replacement dummies. At least some people who voted for the new dummies have know realized their mistake.

Our county politics is vicious. The last election got rid of a bunch of liars. Worse bunch of MOrons I have ever seen. The disturbance those twits made in the county is nothing compared to what the guy in charge of the schools has stirred up. If he keeps his job as a result of what he started I will be shocked.

Thanks for clarifying that, I wasn't sure about any MS involvement. Anyway, its a good program and the price is right.

I doubt MS is going to sponsor anything that cuts into their market share for Office.

If Linux were plug and play with most printers, it would be more popular. I'm using PC Linux on an older computer because it's less resource hungry, simple....
