I have a chance to buy a mtd 8 hp Briggs and Scrapiron chipper shredder that will not run for $25. I tried looking online for an exploded parts view of how it is made, particularly what kind of shredder mechanism and chipper blade they have as well as if the engine supplies the bearing that the chipper turns on or if it is mounted apart from the engine. The mtd site wants a model number before it lets me get close to that information, which I don't have.
My thinking here is this, I would like to try to make a 3 point frame to mount it to and use the pully setup interchangably with my 3 point cordwood buzz saw and the pto on my 19 hp Yanmar. I realize that these units will not hold a candle to the performance of regular 3 point chippers and I don't expect or need that either. Does anyone have a chipper like this that can fill me in on how they are made? Thanks.

Another alternative is to buy it and stick a HF 6.5HP engine on it. They are on sale for $100 now and you can use a 20% off coupon. I'd be concerned with adding that much power to a chipper designed for 8 HP, plus your PTO turns at 540 rpm vs B&S at 3600 rpm.

exactly, I don't think the tractors PTO could spin the chipper blades fast enough to do the job efficiently, they barely do the job with the engine speed as it is, I have a 10 HP chipper, and it works great while chipping green fresh cut limbs up to 2"... although if ever try chipping dried/aged branches it will jamb up, By the limbs/branches being green they have enough flex to bend while being pulled into the chipper, dried branches get wedge inside the shute ;)

I did not plan to run the pto direct at 540 rpm. I agree thats too slow. I have a 12 inch v-belt pulley on a bearing mount that could step up to a smaller pulley on the unit and I also have the two speed pto - 540 and 1000 rpm. My main concern was the mounting of the chipper to the overall machine. If the chipper housing bolts right to the engine and uses the engine bearings to support the blades, then this won't work as it would need another bearing to mount the pulley etc. Too much work for this type of shredder without the swinging hammers and screen.
