I recently started doing some mulching. I am having some potential customers asking questions that I don't know the answers to. Can any of you guys that have been around for a while help me out?

1. If you mulch to ground level, will the stuff grow back next year?

2. Do you need to root rake after mulching?

3. How long does it take for the mulch to rot away?

4. If they want the big trees out too, what's the best way to do that?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

1. Will the stuff grow back next year?(Yes anything not completely removed below surface will grow back)as long as the keep it mowed no proble
2. Are you removing material mulched?or stumps left after mulching.( you will get saplings come up from the stump unless you are mulching below ground)
3. depending on size 6 months years..to 3 years. the smaller your material the quicker it rots. mowing helps
4. Let them know the limitations of your machine. If the customer wants larger trees removed you can use chainsaw mulch tops and limbs and they can deal with the trunk or pile and burn

1. If you mulch to ground level, will the stuff grow back next year? depends. evergreens and junipers will not grow back. some hardwoods that do not have enough energy stored in the root system will die off but most deciduous trees will come back

2. Do you need to root rake after mulching? depends on the scope and the type of mulcher. Some mulchers incorporate material into subsoil better than others. i use a simple industrial grapple on skidsteer to clean up mulch and shreds if the scope of the job calls for it

3. How long does it take for the mulch to rot away?
depends on the type of material mulched, time of year, mulcher type used (was it partially tilled into soil), and moisture content. dry climates lend to less degradation from fungus and other microbes than wet climates.

4. If they want the big trees out too, what's the best way to do that? tree shear or, if the trees are tall and/or large, experienced chainsaw help. mulch the tops, cut firewood or haul-off the bigger logs. Large soft wood logs can be mulched with enough hp or finesse using a smaller machine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
good luck.
