Not sure where to put this - looked through the other forums and it really doesn't quite fit. I've got a 5' (60") King Kutter side-discharge finish mower that I run off my Kubota BX25. It bogs down a little in the heavy grass but I just go real slow. I'm cutting about ~4 acres roughly (the wife cuts the ~1 acre the house sits on with our riding mower) and there's a pond that takes up some of my 6 total.) Basically an odd-shaped pasture.
I considered haying, but I'd have to get one of the mini-balers to run off my Kubota ($10k+) and that's not to mention a rake (which my BX isn't powerful enough for according to all the brochures I've seen.) We're going to be using the ~4 acres (split into two ~2 acre pastures) eventually for a few goats and possibly a couple of horses. Potentially even get a pet Texas Longhorn. That's at least a year or two off - meanwhile, I've got ~4 acres full of bahiagrass. I'd like to keep it short and trim for the meantime until I get animals (and more importantly, fence!)
Can I get a set of these "gator blades" I see that Dixie Chopper makes, block off the side discharge and chop up this bahiagrass with my 5' finish mower? What are my options? I did see where someone had made a custom "hay rake" that he strapped to his front-end loader and just drove around and picked up the hay with that, only to put it in a stack elsewhere. Everything I've read about the bahiagrass is that it's very tough stuff.. and I don't like lumps of it all over the pasture.
