MULESKINNER\'S FIRST M7040 REPORT

I sat on the thing for 6 hours today grading a 40' X 100' pad on top of a small hill for a travel trailer. I had to build a 15' wide road up to the pad also. The ground was hard and rocky decomposed granite. I put 2500 gallons of water on it with my water truck first and let it soak in for about thirty minutes.

This tractor chopped the top of the hill off and had NO PROBLEM grading this project! I must say it is about 80% as good as the JD 210LE. Except for the weight difference and the fact that the JD is 80HP turbocharged with a torque converter, I think this unit is almost as good of a grading tractor.

I'm 90% satisfied with it. As I told my dealer, I would be 100% satisfied if it only had a torque converter. He said ALL OF THE DEALERS HAVE BEEN TELLING KUBOTA THIS FOR YEARS!!! He said if Kubota would , "He would be living in a very large home."

In fact the transmission in the New Holland U80 full size construction tractor is made by KUBOTA!!! And has a torque converter. Kubota holds the patent on the torque converter. Go figure!! Why in the **** they will not put it in the M series is beyond everyone.

Anyway, I noticed the FEL control speed is a bit slower than my L39, as the L39 has more GPM hydraulic flow. I can live with that!

Gentlemen this is a good unit and I would recommend it to anyone wanting a powerful Kubota brand grading tractor. I think this unit will make a better grading tractor than a M8540 or the M9540 because of their size. This tractor is the same length and width as the 80's Ford grading tractors which are a highly sought after grading tractor theses days.

The fit, finish and paint work on the tractor part made in Japan is superb! The FEL pieces made in Georgia leave a bit to be desired as far as the quality and care taken on the paint job. It took me two cans of Kubota orange spray paint to touch up the areas where there was NO PAINT and the areas that should have had two coats for proper coverage. Oh well I guess that is the difference in pride between Japaneese workers and the good ole USA folks!

I will post more reports as time goes on. I now have 10 hours on it. I took it easy on it today, as I'm not a fan of the "Break it in like you use it" therory. Press on!

Re: MULESKINNER\'S FIRST M7040 REPORT

I have to agree with the grading and the paint. Sad thing my Dealer had to touch up my LA1353, paint some rusted spots on the rops too. But Mule my M9540 is a HORSE! I just don't know what all I'm going get into with it ...if I can keep my wife off it long enough to see...HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Wow! What do you use your M9540 for? I looked at that model first, but I felt it would be too big and appeared to be engineered more for AG purposes. I wish the M7040 came with a turbo, as that is what I wanted. Do you have a cab or open ROPS?

Re: MULESKINNER\'S FIRST M7040 REPORT

Pardon my ignorance, but can you explain how the torque converter you speak of works in combination with a manual transmission on a tractor? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I really just don't understand how that combo works, but I have noticed that most, if not all, of the full size commercial TLBs and tractor loader landscaper tractors have four speed transmissions "with torque converter".

Obviously you have experience with them, so hopefully you can educate me and other TBNers on this topic.

Thanks.

Re: MULESKINNER\'S FIRST M7040 REPORT

It works just like an automatic transmission in a street vehicle. The torque converter is basically a fluid connection. You shift the gear ranges in the transmission manually like say a GST trans.

On the JD 210LE you have the choice of a floor mounted manual 4 speed gear range shifter, or what they call the "Powershift" option. The 210 I demoed had the powershift option. The shuttle shift has a rotatable knob on it like a windshield wiper switch on a late model vehicle. You rotate the knob to select the gear range you want to be in. (One thru four) When you push the shuttle shift up, it engages the forward gear of the trans. You then hold your foot on the brake pedal until you are ready to accelerate like a regular vehicle. You come to a stop with the brake pedal and then shift into reverse or neutral and repeat the same operation again. Clear as mud? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I've never had one apart, but I bet it's built a whole lot like an automatic transmission.

Re: MULESKINNER\'S FIRST M7040 REPORT

If you have a New Holland dealer around you ask them for a print out showing the transmission of a 345D, 445D or 545D. The backhoes have them as well. They are the absolute bomb (that is a good thing /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) when it comes to building a transmission for a lot of forward and reverse work all day long. NH designed the torque converter transmission and Kubota won the contract to build it for NH for years. I got the story from a Kubota factory guy at the dealer meeting we had in Oct. 2005. We were asking Kubota why they could not put that type tansmssion in the new MXXXXHD tractors.

Interesting point. At 11 hours my engine oil is still clear on the stick??? All of my indirect injection Kubota engines had turned the oil black within that hour time period! I think this speaks volumes for the new direct injection engine.

Also it is very quite in comparison, as far as diesel rattle goes. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
