I have a new (50 hours) mx5100, and so far its a great tractor. However, I keep reading mention of hearing the turbo spinning down, and I don't think I'm hearing it. How obvious is it?

Also, the one thing I'm not impressed with is the fue consumption. I'm told it will get better as the tractor gets broken in. How much better could it get? Seems to be burning more fuel then the IH 384 I had previously, and way more than the old Massey 35 I still have.

Thanks for any comments!!!

I owned a turbo car, and I never could hear the tubo in that thing. You can on occasion hear the pop off valve (waste gate) release a little air, it kind of sounds like a gasp of air. This usually happen when you let off the throttle when at full boast.
There is no way around it, a turbo gives more power but at the cost of more fuel used.

I've got the 5100 also, i don't hear the turbo spool up or down. I also thought that was weird. as of today i only have 75 hrs on mine, i get about 6 to 7 hrs per tank of fuel. if you ask me that sucks.

other than that i do like most everything else about the tractor. for the price you can't beat what you get.

It will take about 500 hours plus or minus for the engine to break in and to be able to see any major fuel consumption change.

There is much that can be done at the time of set-up with the weight as well as how the tractor is run that can save fuel.

Many have set up their tractors with a comparable of a payloader when in fact they do far more hours of utility work like mowing. This will have the engine using a lot of power and burning more fuel just to move the heavier tractor when not needed.

Art are talking about filling the tires, and adding weight to the rear of the tractor? if so i don't think most people will remove weight and add it again or for that matter fill and unfill their tires to go from cutting to "payloader" or dirt mode to cut mode. I don't have the time to do that. I think we set up our tractors to get the most use out of them, and for safety. If i didn't have my tires filled because i cut more than i dig. . . one day i'll catch my self off guard will lifting and might roll the tractor because there was no weight on the back. Just a thought

i do understand that having the extra weight on the tractor will make it burn a little more fuel but i'm only getting 6 to 7 hrs per 11 gallons of fuel (i have a 12+ gallon tank but when i fill up it is about 11 gallons)

my father in law has a "Long" tractor, i use to use it and could go a couple of days before filling up. I don't remember his tank size but i think it sipped fuel. It wasen't a small tractor, frame size it is bigger than mine.

We have the larger tractors like 125's without loaded tires and they talk of about a gallon an hour on general duty farm work. We find that with many of the smaller ones, with mowing they will come in at a gallon an hour.

Most people might only remove or add weight between seasons of use as to what they will be doing with the tractor. We do have plenty with loaded tires(old school) instead of weights and as I said most stay one way.
