I have an MX6 cutter on a 5065E tractor. When I first bought my property, I learned where all of the rocks were and where all of the discarded wire was. I tore up my cutter and blades. It reached a point where the cutter would smoke even if I wasn't cutting anything thick. I took it to the shop and they replaced the disc/clutch plates, the blades and everything except the base and the PTO drive I think. I went to cut last week and it started smoking immediately. I didn't lower the cutter very far at all, tried to make sure it was balanced and I was cutting very thin grass. I thought there might be a break in period on the new clutch plates but it doesn't appear to be the case. I think the bottom line is that I don't know what I'm doing and I have something set up wrong. I've tried to find videos to help but most of them are focused on the height. I'm not cutting low at all and the grass is incredibly thin right now. Any suggestions or guides you could recommend?

Thanks!

Think you need to identify specifically where the smoke/heat is coming from then focus on that.

Maybe something just needs to be greased.

Maybe bearings (?) are burning up.

Was the cutter new or used when you git it?

the cutter was new. It's smoking where the clutch plates are. I'm wondering if they are too tight. I just spent $750 to get it all repaired.

Leave the cutter in the raised position, get it running, and see if it starts smoking around the length of time it usually starts smoking.

If it does start smoking while in the raised position, then clearly the actual mowing is not the cause.

A slipping/smoking slip clutch definitely is NOT ADJUSTED TOO TIGHT! Sounds typical for slip clutch adjusting nuts not being adjusted correctly. I suggest to adjust nuts following instructions in MX6 operators manual. I posted photos from MX6 operators manual with slip clutch adjustment instructions if you can't locate your operators manual. If you can't locate your operators manual you can download a MX6 OM @ Search for Equipment Publications - Technical Information Store

IF clutch is smoking it indicates to me its not adjusted properly, maybe not tight enough, and is slipping which causes friction which causes heat, which causes it to smoke....
Same sort of abuse you get when clutch is slipping in your car or truck and you can smell that nasty "burnt" smell...
There may be another reason clutch is slipping/smoking and maybe its doing its job because of a bind up n gear box or something wrapped around blades/shaft cause excessive resistances to rotational forces...

Thank you. Frustrating that I just paid dealer $700 to fix the problem. Guess I'll have to be a little less lazy...lol.
