MX6 Cutter Safety Chains

Question, I just bought a JD 4720, FEL, Hydro, 82" Tiller and the JD MX6 Cutter, which was delivered today /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif . The MX cutter was delivered without any shields or chains on the front or rear. The JD drop off driver stated that he thought it was normal and he thought it was available as an option. The JD Website lists the chains as standard for an MX. When I contact the dealer, he said it was normal to order an MX without chains and that I could buy them for $425, or $200 for just the front. He stated this was why the cutter was discounted to the purchase price of $1850. (4720 was 25K with all the bells and shinny things)

This cutter was acquired by him from a dealer 150 miles away because he didn't have one in stock. I'm thinking he either made a mistake or is looking to get more money, am I wrong, is it normal for cutters to be used without any safety shield on the front or back?

Has anyone bought an MX without the chains recently?

They are standerd equip, that can be deleted.

IMHO, the price you say you paid for the cutter would reflect
"less shields". I know some dealers do sell cutters without them, although we would never stock them that way.

My MX6 came with front chains, but non rears. I didn't notice it at delivery. I had them added when I took my 4720 in for a oil leak.

Sounds like you got a really good deal on your tractor.

My dealer sold me my cutter sans rear chains. I just ordered them and now I need to put them on. Maybe the $450 was figured for labor to install both sets. I'd order my own and install myself. Pretty straightforward if they send all the correct hardware.

My MX6 I purchased between 3-4 years ago had 'em front and back included. I would guess that's standard. Seems prices have edged up some, paid $1700 for it than, but it was near the end of the season, sometime in Sept. I've only started using this cutter alot in the past year or so, but has held up well to the rocks I "bump" once awhile. Sure glad I don't have to deal with shear pins.

I bought a MX6 in May, 2002 for $1,800 and it came with both front and rear safety chains.

Both quotes I got on an LX4 stated "without safety chains." When I placed the order I got chains on the back for about $100. I thought it strange that they would sell them without the chains but I guess they want to show a low price going in a quote time.

When I was shopping for my tractor, I thought the same thing, I buy an MX5, and it comes with the standard chains. I thought is was wierd that one dealer actually wrote on the quote MX5 with frontand rear chains. His price was higher (go figure /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif ). Anyway, I wound up buying from another dealer, and when it was delivered, the cutter didn't have chains. It did have the rubber shields front and back, which is good,because the iron ore rocks around here tend to shatter when hit by a fast moving, heavy, metal blade.
