I've thought about trying it myself. Use a friend's lathe to cut the gland off and I have a TIG and a MIG welder to weld them back on. Actually, I'd probably but the appropriate size gland and a piece of cylinder tubing and weld that back on. Then the cylinder would be converted to be rebuildable.
