I was out pushing the snow off of a place for the dog to go to the bathroom and had a big smile on my face. I could just see my Dad shaking his head at me wondering what was wrong with me. He was an old farmer and he took very good care of his animals but He did not baby them. I guess I am getting more "city" all of the time. Ed

I live in California and had some co-workers over... they were concerned because my dog is an outside dog... one said it was abuse. More specifically because he sleeps outside.

My dogs always have long happy lives... they are active and have a job... watching the property... not that they are aggressive in the least... just alert.

They also have spent many thousands on vet bills, insulin shots, etc...

My dogs get a good diet, are not fat and have beautiful coats... the youngest is 15 and was born here... Australian Shepherd.

When it comes to pets everyone has an opinion

Last year when we had a couple of feet of snow, I took the big 7' snowblower and made a path for the llamas and goats to get out and walk around the pasture.
They seemed to enjoy it as they were running laps around the path for the first while.

If doing something for the animal's welfare makes you feel good then I say it is a no brainer. If doing nothing for the animal's welfare when you have the opportunity makes you feel good, then you might have a problem.

"What he said"

My property must really look strange from an aerial view because I make paths everywhere after it snows. Gives bowser something to do.

my dog's legs are about 4 inches long so I need to shovel a place for her to go.....or she goes on the porch or in the garage.....she has no choice....so i have no choice.

We had a Cairn terrier (like Toto). His legs were only 6-8" long. In winter, I'd snow-blow a path around the edge of his fenced in yard, probably about 200' of path, and he loved it. So did the rabbits, as they could get to the grass. Well, old Max knew the rabbits were out there. And the rabbits knew old Max was out there. It was quite comical to let him out and watch him stand up on his hind legs to look over the trench, and on the other side of the yard, you'd see the rabbit doing the same thing! They'd make eye contact, and take off, both going clockwise. When Max would get to where the rabbit was, he'd pop up and look around only to see the rabbit looking back at him from where he started. This would go on for 4-5 minutes until the rabbit would slip through the fence and run down the alley. Max would keep running and popping up for another 10 minutes. Great fun. I miss that little dog. :(

The first thing I did this morning, when I got up, was to dig out an area for my dogs. 3 dogs...one doesn't care about the snow.. the other two hate it...one of them only weighs 15 lbs and can barely walk thru the snow.

What we do for our dogs doo doo.

As you can see Ellie's legs won't keep her head above the snow.

So we built her a poop palace which came in extremely handy during the 24 hours of heavy snow.
