We inherited a Shih Tzu about a year and a half ago. Last winter I did the same as you, and shoveled a nice place in the yard for the dog to do his business. After the spring thaw, I ended up with dead grass where I had shoveled. I think this dog has acid for pee. From now on he can go in the gravel drive.

I blow a section off the front perch for the dog to 'go'. every time I blow the driveway, I blow this section too. Brown snow anybody?

I don't see anything wrong with clearing space for animals to stretch their legs a but.... They'll be easier to deal with in the barn ...
When the snow gets deep at our place I clear areas for the deer to move around in... When there is 3 to 4 ft on the ground they have a heck of a time moving around... plus when the sun comes out there is a little exposed grass...
