some sort of play-house. "Play-house" is probably the wrong word given that my eldest is 14 and the other two are 11 and 10 but you get the idea. I'm just wondering if anyone here has built something like this for their kids? Just like most anything else, I'm sure you can go from quite basic to rather extravagant. Personally, I'd like to build something that they will be happy with now...and later but I don't really have a good idea about what that may be. I'm planning on doing the typical google searches etc but thought I'd post this here to see what my fellow TBNers have done.

Get a yard barn and dress it up with windows and flower boxes. It can be a potting shed after they grow up.

Many years ago, I built my daughters a tree house from scraps left over from building our home. It was bare essentials and they loved it. It's Spartan appearance was OK with them (unpainted) and they loved it because it was nearly camouflaged in the trees.

Build them a pole barn big enough for your tractor.

Dug them a bunker and used some cleared trees and empty feed bags for the roof net cost $0. They really enjoy it because it's cool in there when it's hot...rain however makes it unusable for a few days.

Tree house was really basic, built on the ground and the boy helped me position it in the trees. Spent a lot on hardwear for this project but I think all said and done it was under $250.

Mossroad has the right idea. In a very short time these kids will have moved on to more adult concerns, cars for example?

Maybe you can park a 20 year oldsmobile in the yard as a clubhouse. Later they can drive it

As others have mentioned, don't go to crazy with it because is 5 or 6 very short years you will be the only one looking at it. Unless of course you want to have it for grand kids too. Make it memorable by having them design and help build it.

I cant believe that a 14 year old would have any interest in a tree house for much time at all, at 15 she will surely turn her attention to the opposite sex and cars.
My daughter /son in law bought a house with a "tree house" built about 15 feet in the air on pilings. I don't think the kids ever use it and it is a really nice little play house.
I would try to interest them in some other project.
