I grew up in a family that owned gasoline powered Farmalls, and I still share ownership of a "M" with my brother. About 8 years ago I purchased a Yanmar, my first diesel. In 8 years I have ran it out of fuel 2 times. The first time my cousin, helped me get it started, the second time I was able to start it myself. The problems I have been experiencing are loss of power and black smoke. Can anyone tell me what I should be looking for?

Check your air filter. As a test, you can remove the air filter, and test run the tractor without it. Don't do this long, but as a test you will not hurt anything.

If black smoke disappears, and power returns, change the filter.

As Birdman253 said, check your air filter first. It's easy to forget about it. Next, when was the last time the fuel filter was changed?

Ditto what the others said.. The very fist thing i check with a black smoking diesel is air filter.. next is fuel filter.. next is the injector pump / injectors.

I agree about the air fitler, but never forget the fuel filter or filter(s).

My dad had replaced his fuel filter on his New Holland, and still had moments of power loss, showed up as loss of rpms. Turned out there was a "hidden" in-line filter, closer to the fuel tank, that was clogging intermittantly. Once replaced, you could hold the old one up to the light, shake it, and see the crud sloshing around inside.

I had same problem with a JD 300B or at least had same symptoms. It turned out I had bent (kinked) the return line for the unused fuel that is returned to the
fuel tank. This is something you might check and also if this line is clogged would
give same problen as if bent. In my case this was an inexpensive fix for what I
thought was going to be a major repair to the motor.

Great advice, I changed the air filter and have been plowing snow all winter without a problem. Thank you

Great advice, after our first snow I ran it without the filter for a short time and it ran like a champ. I changed the air filter and have been plowing snow all winter without a problem. Thank you
