After mowing today I was blowing the grass off the tractor. I noticed under the engine an oil drip. Closer inspection shows it is the steering cylinder leaking at the rod end cover via the rod seal.

Probably not a big deal (warranty) but still the "awl-shoot" factor of owning a new tractor and having it leak oil within the first two weeks of ownership. Has this happened to anyone else?

I guess I need to get over it and call the dealer for an appointment. Leak is significant enough that I do not want to run the tractor anymore than necessary.

Also, can I install the lock-out valve or does it require any special tools etc. for installation? I assume I will replace all o-rings and use teflon tape on threads?

By “lockout” valve, I’m assuming you’re talking about the optional fitting that can be closed to divert hydraulic fluid from the X’s mower deck lift cylinder. If so, it’s a pretty easy install; 11/16 or 3/4 open end wrenches and 10 minutes tops. General thought is not to use teflon tape on these hydraulic fittings----tape fragments can break off and get caught in the tight clearances of the hyd pump/valves.

I agree with al, and the valve is easy to do. By the time you have the elbow removed, you will know how the new part goes back in its place.

Yes, it is the optional fitting. Sorry for not being more descriptive. I studied the repair manual and saw where it goes.

Questions:

- Will the line/connect be under pressure? Do I bleed it first?
- Will I need to put anything on the threads or leave them clean?
- Torque requirements, if any?
- Do I need to worry about post line air-bleeding afterwards?

'skeeters have not been a problem this year. Now the Japanese beatles are another thing. Here in Indiana they seem to land on my neck and attempt bite the he11 out of me. I must be a natural beatle 'walking trap'. They are nasty bugs!

these are all o-ring fittings, as stated earlier, once you take the elbow off, the fitting goes in easy as pie. snug the fittings tight, but they are just o-ring fittings, so huge torque isn't necessary..
you shouldn't have to worry about pressure,, it will drip a couple tablespoons of oil, not too bad.

Thanks,

Called the dealer and they're picking up the unit tomorrow to replace the steering cylinder. I mentioned the lockout valve and they will install it for free. So I'm going to have the dealer do it for me.

Thanks for the responses. Oh, I really like that diesel engine!

Hey awlchu. That X595's quite a piece, eh??
Mine had two problems, which appeared fairly early (less than 100 hours on the machine so far) that you might want to be sure and check out.
1. The fuel gauge read "Full" all the time. Could be a problem if you're at the wrong end of the North 40 and discover it isn't Full /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. Warranty fix. They replaced the whole dash panel, which re-set my hours to "0", so, I have to remember to add 32 hours to everything.
2. There's a wire loom running lengthwise on the engine; the headlight wires and glow plug wires are in there (probably some other ones too /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif). On mine, that loom was, I assume incorrectly, put underneath a vacuum (??) hose, and, the lengthwise slit in the loom was facing "down". The pressure of the hose forced the wires down on top of the glow plugs, and caused the headlight wire to short out on top of two of the glow plugs. I caught it by accident, as I happened to have the headlights on and the hood up - I bumped the wire loom and WHOA!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif, sparks flew. Fixed the wires and re-routed the loom above the hose.

rwest,

Thanks for the heads up. Come to think about it, I remember the gauge being pegged at full. I'll double check that tonight. I recall the erratic behavior on my X485 with wild swings. JD said it was a design problem with the float and the fuel tank, i.e. ,nothing that can be done about it......

I will also check the wiring loom in the engine compartment. Sounds like the insulation wore off the wires due to vibration?

rwest,

Do you recall the burn rate (at WOT) of diesel fuel on your X595?

1gal/hr, 1.5gal/hr, .5 gal/hr.......?

WOT= wide open throttle

rwest,

Just checked the loom and found the same problem on my tractor. Although the insulation was not worn through, it is exposed and resting against the valve cover corner. Ripe for rubbing, so to speak!

I simply disconnected everything and routed the loom over the fuel line (with its protective cover) and reconnected the wires. Used a couple of tie-wraps and secured the loom to the fuel line etc. . Much better routing in my opinion.

And thanks, I owe you a cold one!
