I dropped by my local John Deere dealer today just to see what they had on the lot. When I mentioned to the salesman I was looking at a few other brands I specifically mentioned Kioti and Mahindra. He just started to shake his head and said that it was not a good idea. He said they would not hold up long term and the resale would be much less and would be hard to sell. It surprised me that he would say this much less really think a JD is so much better than some of these other brands. Maybe he is right but I cannot imagine all those other tractors being so woefully unworthy. He did say that if I wanted to compare a Mahindra in the 30-35 hp range to a JD he suggested the 3038E. I felt bad for even suggesting I was looking at anything other than a green tractor.

Is this the norm with the big name dealers?

I have never dealt with a JD dealer, but I've heard many times that they can be cocky, rude, and they don't work very hard for a sale.

I owned a Kioti for 1 year and roughly 200 hrs ... sold it for $1,000 less than I paid new. I think the resale was just fine.

One dealer's opinion of another brand is the absolute last I'd listen to. You ever here of a Nissan dealer recommending a Toyota?

No, but It is the norm with lazy sales help that can't see past their next day off and Fridays paycheck.

It is human nature, I guess, to have a tendency to be overconfident when you represent a good brand. JD dealers shouldn't be, because people have choices these days. I would say that JD stands above others when it comes to support but overconfidence can result in lost sales.

My last tractor was a John Deere 850.
Had it for 15 years and sold it with around 1830 hours on it.
It was a good reliable machine, never had any problem with it.
I've owned my Kioti DK 35 for 12 years and 1820 hours. It has been great. Every bit as well built, solid and reliable as the JD was.

Two good choices that have served you well. Interesting that you had them for 1830 and 1820 hours. Are you getting ready to upgrade again in 10 hours? Haha

It's terrible for a salesman to knock a competitor's product so disrespectfully. He could have said "those products are good but mine is better and here's why" and gained some respect. This way he sort-of reveals a contempt for the customer. Very uncool.

It has been my experience (limited to one dealer) that they don't much care if they make a sale or not. A "take it or leave it" attitude seems to be the norm.

I still have the 750 I bought new, but I've bought most of my attachments elsewhere due to that sort of attitude. I even tried the Dealer "A" vs. Dealer "B" process when looking for a Woods backhoe. John Deere wanted (don't quote me on the exact numbers) $5100 on the loading dock, the AGCO dealer in another town was willing to go $4500 and load the crate in my truck.

Told the JD salesman that and his response was "I guess you'd better buy it from AGCO then."

So I did.

I don't even buy parts from Mother Deere unless I have absolutely no other choice.

No plans to upgrade.
My JD was a 2WD with no loader. I upgrade it because I wanted a loader, 4 WD.
The Kioti has all the features I want/need. Loader with skid steer QA. Shuttle shift w/synchronized transmission, independent PTO, power steering, tilt steering, foldable ROPs, 4 WD, extendable lower link arms on the 3 point, rear remotes with top and tilt, backhoe. Etc.
The DK is a very nice machine and does everything I need. I plan to have it for many more years
