I have an elderly neighbor from who I have borrowed his tractor for my fall cutting of the fields. My 8N is down for a while until
I can find time to get to it.

Getting back to the M4050... This thing has not been taken care of for a while! lol .... But, man, I love this tractor - sips diesel , power steering and
power for days! ..... I may never go back to my 8N!!

So, to pay him back and mostly, to help him out, I want to do a few things to it.

First thing is CHANGE THE OIL !!! ... I have never seen oil so dirty. !! lol

So can anyone toss me a few fluid capacities?
For now, just engine oil and Tranny / diff gear oil

What kind and how much.

And two part #'s please. I'm hoping I won't run into a split year model with parts.

Oil filter and
Starter

Any help giving me some info on how to help out this fellow will be appreciated

I think I have become a Kubota Fan ! ;)

E-mail Messicks (advertiser on this site) with the model and serial number and they will provide you with all the consumable parts numbers. Additionally, they have good prices on filters, lube oil (SUDT) and plenty of good advice. Good folks.

Thanks!

Can you give me a general area to look for the Serial #?

Thanks!

Can you give me a general area to look for the Serial #?

Generally located on Right or Left hand side on the main frame, above the front axle

Diesels tend to make the oil pretty black. Does not necessarily mean the oil has not been changed for a long time.

Nice of you to do that for your neighbor.

The M4050 uses regular tractor hydraulic & gear oil from Walmart, Agway, TSC etc. A 5-gallon bucket plus another 8-10 quarts should be enough to get up on the dipstick. For the engine Rotella 15w40 is available everywhere. Take out both engine drain plugs. These engines take 7-8 quarts. Check levels after running.

Agreed, but be careful!!

If I lent someone my tractor and they changed the oil, I wouldn't be pleased. I'm not elderly, so that's a little different, and my tractor is newer, but still, don't mess anything up.

Here is one source of data (but not what you are looking for):

TractorData.com Kubota M4050 tractor information

Here is Messick's page on the M4050:

Kubota M4050 parts

The starter is $450 and an owner's manual is $15. Probably needs an air filter, definately a hydraulic filter, and maybe a fuel filter along with the oil filter. It is going to be an expensive project.

You may have to call a Kubota dealer and have them look up the exact engine oil and HST oil capacities. Maybe someone on here has an owner's manual.

I agree with the suggestion above to ask first whether it is OK to mess with (service) his tractor. Some people are not receptive to such things. If something goes wrong later you can be sure who will be blamed.

Oh, and if you are going to go the full service route, don't forget the front axle if it is the 4WD M4050DT model.

He knows I'm working on it and grateful ... I have worked on cars my whole life and my 8N for 20 years. This is my first diesel, however.
Surely I can't mess up an oil change! lol

I go here for starters and alternators for Kubotas. Never had one that didn't measure up. The orig part is 15601-63010. The replacement from these people is AHSND0312. In the door under $90. Similar prices on many models.
