Yanmar 240D
* * * I recently purchased an old yanmar 240D. It’s a broke down ole beater but I’m dying to play on it. LOL. I got it from a fellow who says he owned it for 20+ years. It was parked in his yard with a for sale sign on it. Right where it broke down while he was mowing last. His claim is he thinks it has a blown head gasket; it was pushing water out the exhaust.
* * The last thing I need was another project, but I wanted a tractor. I had sold my quad to by one. I was not sure if I could justify buying a new one for my 8 acres. So I opted to buy and older one then maybe in a couple years get a newer one.

* * * * * *So I got my new toy home. My thoughts are see if it runs and diagnose the problem myself sense he seemed a little unsure. It turns over has compression. Bled the fuel system up to the injectors. No luck starting. Something fishy here. I pulled the first injector out. (It pulled right out) hmm. It had no insulator ring under it. I took it apart it was missing the little cone shaped spring pad. This was my first sign I did not get the whole truth. So now I am waiting on parts from Hoye.

* * * * * *So in the mean time I drained the black sludge out if the block and changed the filter. I pulled the bottom plate or pan off and cleaned it all out. Refilled with delo 400 15w40.

* * * * * *I drained the transmission and rear end case. When I pulled the plug about 2.5 gallons of clear water poured out before the oil. What did come out was white milkshake thick stuff. I understand this is all one unit and is the hydraulic reservoirs also. Correct me if I am wrong. I pulled screen and replaced it. I need to flush this system out. What fluid should I put in and run a while then re drain? I guess I’m looking for a cheaper fluid to start with, since I won’t be re using it.

I do have FEL.
Operator and Shop manuals are on their way from Hoyes
I am looking at all the advice I can get to help me get it started. And decide if it’s usable or not, and what to check or do next.

Welcome! I've had a YM240 (2wd) since 2003. You might like to see the dealer brochures referenced from my sig at the bottom of this post. This model is about as simple as a hammer. You probably already discovered this is the same thing as the gray-market (intended for Japan) YM2000D, with a couple of minor changes to meet US spec.

You said it has good compression. But if the two components below the injectors are missing then the head was off. (or else those injector chambers came loose and went clear through the pistons!) You can check that fuel reaches the injectors by installing them on the fuel lines upside down and watching for an even spray. (Observe safety procedures - injecting diesel into your skin is deadly.)

I replaced my injectors and it took an afternoon of devising ever-stronger pullers to get them out. If yours popped right out, then they were out recently.

What did you find in the crankcase? The service manual says to open it and clean the oil intake screen every 600 (??) hours but I don't think anyone here ever did. Did it seem to need that?

As for cheap hydraulic/trans fluid - The Universal tractor fluid from Tractor Supply or Autozone (same supplier) is the cheapest I'm aware of. Or if you know someone with a transmission shop, you might ask for some used ATF that was changed out at minimal mileage and use that temporarily for a flush. You need 4 gallons. I just poured diesel in the top of my transmission and scrubbed the sump with a bottle brush as it ran out, then let it all drip out overnight before refilling.

Got any photos of your project?

Bottom was easy to pull. The oil was blackest and thickest I ever seen. But I have not worked on diesels much. Yeah I believe injector was out. But the other one is tight. All parts are in there. Did find small screw in oil pan. Will try to get picture of project and the part I found on soon, maybe you guys can help identify it

Thanks!

In your judgment, did the oil intake screen need cleaning?

No it was not a screen more a tube with holes in it. I wiped it down and sprayed aerosol can of some carb cleaner in it. And air hose. If you do regular oil changes and don't really need to take the plate off. I see no reason to. There really was no screen to plug up. Not saying mine is complete. If I look in my parts book tomorrow and see the picture are different then what I seen in mine. I will let you know.
The screen in the transmission was pretty bad though.

I just put new rings and rod bearings on ym2000. The pickup tube in the oil pan is just that, a tube with holes punched in it.

What about the recommendation in the Operation Manual to drop the pan and clean that tube occasionally?

Does it seem that with modern high-detergent oil this periodic cleaning is unnecessary?

(Of course you clean it if you have the pan off for something else.)

Well California I won't say not to ever check the tube. But you know how well you maintain your tractor. This oil was very thick and sludgey and the pick up tube was clear of any obstructions. Chances are I won't check it again unless I need in there or am having oil pressure issues. The holes in tube are probably 1/8 or so
