Got the Nh running great , now I am torn between a 5 or 6 ft rotary mower , A 6ft may be tight on my trailer , and may be a bit big. I have a line on a like new JD rotary mower for $ 400 . I will be cutting a variety of sites and conditions. Opinions / recommendations

I like a bush hog to be the same width as my tractor. Helps me to be able to reach things without snagging them with the front corner.

I have an older 5 foot Fred Cain rotary mower with a slip clutch on my NH 1920, primarily because it came with the tractor. I sometimes wish I had a larger one but the 5 footer is lighter and easier to maneuver in tight spots. It is also well built and has a good gearbox on it. I would buy the higher quality mower and not base your decision on size alone.

Whatever you get, watch the weight of the mower. Some of the heavy duty mowers are pretty heavy so when you lift it off the ground with the three point your front wheels will get pretty light and it will affect your steering capability. If you have a loader installed on the tractor, it can help offset the weight. In extreme cases, front ballast maybe necessary. I have a 6 ft mower that weighs 775 pounds. If I put it on my TO-30, the three point will lift it but the front wheels will come off the ground when I lift it then settle back down. The steering is light and I have to e very careful. So I only use it on the Ford 4610 with an FEL.

The general rule of thumb is ~5 hp per foot of cutter width and that pretty conservative, unless you are mowing saplings.

I agree with the person who said the mower should be at least the width of the tractor rear wheel width.

The weight was my concern , I have a 4 ft for my bx 24 , I was toying with a 6 ft but I will probably go with a stronger 5 ft I will probably do some rough cutting with it a 5 ft seems more manageable .

Yeah, I think I would go with the John Deere mower for $400 (which I'm assuming is 5ft?). If it is 5ft and you decide you want a 6ft mower after using it some, then you should have no problem re-selling the JD mower and probably get your money back out of it.
