Re: My Property\'s Two Best Friends

What can you tell me about your spreader. Is this what I will need to spread lawn chemicals on my 5 acres of lawn? I don't need to plant or seed anything. What make/model and approximate price?

Thanks

Re: My Property\'s Two Best Friends

It's a Befco 203-120 I bought about five years ago when I had a JD 445. It graduated up with my 2210 and now to my 4110. I had to have a new PTO driveshaft fabricated with the first graduation to the 2210, which also worked on my 4110.

It's the smallest 540 RPM PTO "Hop" Spreader made by Befco. It holds 225 pounds of fertilizer or (dry) sand and it spreads nice and evenly with those materials. When I spread grass seed, I walk it with a commercial grade broadcast spreader that gives me better control.

I paid about $400 a few years ago and that included the customiztion of the PTO shaft for my 445. You can find these types of PTO brodcasters for a slightly better price than that at your Tractor Supply or maybe your dealer. ...Yes, this is what you need to spread your granular fertlizer, pesticides, or pelletized lime. I use mine almost exclusively for fall fertlizer, spring fertilizer with pre-emergent weed/crabgrass control, and lime every couple of years. I use my sprayer for weed control, and both turf and tree pesticides as needed. Here's a link to the Befco site:

Oops--didn't mean to post this in Buying/Pricing. Can you Forum wizards move it to Owning/Operating?

Re: My Property\'s Two Best Friends

I recently attended a farm equipment auction where a new one went for $50. I thought it would be too big. Of course if I had bid it would have been more $ /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I think I'll go back next month. There were 5 or 6 there in November. I've seen them on Ebay for $329. I wasn't sure if they are all the same. I looked through the forums and found a few posts. Apparently there are some differences. I can't remember the company that makes the one I saw at auction, but they had a brochure that lists a smaller unit for the subcuts. There weren't any of that size at the auction. I think I'll go for the big one if I can get one at a good price. I'll let you know how I do. The auction is the last thursday every month. I'm thinking December may not be too busy and might be a good opportunity for low prices.

Unless your tractor won't run or lift it, or you have no place to store it, you pretty much can't one that's too big. They don't need to be filled up to the brim to work. If bigger is cheaper, go for it!

Re: My Property\'s Two Best Friends

Love that F687 for its cut and servicability. The 60" deck on the 4110 is great, but the 7-Iron gives the best cut I've ever had. Easy to clean, too. See attached pic

Re: My Property\'s Two Best Friends

Pete,

What exactly did you do to your mower to "winterize" it. I've got a nice Zero turn that needs attention. Just not sure aside from fuel stabilizer what to do to it. Any suggestions would be helpful. The manual has nothing to say about winter down time.

Re: My Property\'s Two Best Friends

I guess the only real "winterization" was the fuel additive and a battery charge and storage. I used the term loosly to mean that I blew out, wiped down, cleaned, detailed, serviced, and stored the Z-track. Winterizing my 4110 means all that and setting up the plow, rear weight and getting out the chains just in case.
