Yanmar YM1700
This week I purchased my Yanmar, It is a YM1700 and it came with a Front end loader and slasher, the slasher needs a bit of tidying up but otherwise the rig looks OK. Today I gave it an oil change (used a multi grade 15-40 synthetic oil is that OK) and cleaned up a few leaks. The hydraulic oil looks a bit milky so will get it checked and may also replace that as well. (What grade) Took the rig down the back and dug up a bit of dirt, the controls on the FEL are all back the front but that will come with time, after an howr or so started to get the hang of the controls. Unfortunately the gear stick came out in my hand while changing gears, was able to crawl it back to the shed and after a bit of fiddling it went back into place, any suggestions as to why this was able to happen, is it just wear or have I lost a circlip.
Any help greatly appreciated

Welcome to the forum. :welcome: Guessing you are from down under or Great Britain just going by the term slasher. As long as your synthetic is diesel rated it will work fine. Fluid & Oil Types

Breakdown of your shifter here. #9 may be missing. SHIFTER: Yanmar Tractor Parts

To TBN Ned. This is a great site.

Sounds like you have a good handle on things.

YM195 was the US export version of YM1700 and is nearly identical, the only difference is some safety features.

Operation Manual for YM195 specifies John Deere 303 or HyGrad transmission and hydraulic fluid. JD 303 is an obsolete spec but anything claimed compatible is the minimum you should use.

Here in the US, UTF (Universal Tractor Fluid) and preferably a modern multi-grade version, is the modern upgrade for what Yanmar specified in that 1970's manual.

Transmission and hydraulic reservoir capacity is 15 Liters, 16 US Quarts [4 Gallons]. Remove the triangular plate to drain the transmission and clean the 'strainer' that comes out with the plate.

And welcome! Where are you?

Yes Australia, thanks for the reply, I had allready had a look at the parts plan and I thought the same thing but plan to take it out again and take it to a local tractor place and see if they have any ideas. It still works OK as long as I don't get to vigorous with the gear changing.

Queensland Australia, I will have to update my profile. Thanks for the info, I might find the bit that has dropped of the gear stick in the strainer:laughing: Is there also a filter for the transmission/hydraulic fluid? the hydraulics are a bit sluggish and a friend suggested it could be the filter being dirty, I suspect the oil is contaminated with water as it has a milky look.
Regards

Another question regarding hydraulics, FEL 1 lever controls the bucket push lever down bucket tilts down, up the bucket tilts up, all good but with the main lifting arms it is opposite lever down arms go up, this is a major pain in the A Can this be fixed by swapping the hoses on the lifting rams.

Yes, swap hoses. If you have 'float' at the end of the lever travel, you might have to mount the valve in the opposite direction to get float with the lever pushed forward. (float is where the bucket is free to move ignoring the hydraulics, mostly used for back-dragging the bucket to smooth rough ground).

There is no other hydraulic filter, just that strainer screen in the transmission. Yanmar's recommendation was change fluid annually but I doubt anyone does that.

These tractors have a small pump so the hydros are slower than on modern tractors. The spec for Hydro fluid we all look for is JD303 but as has been discussed here before, that is an old...like 50 year old obsolete spec that nobody licenses or tests for these days so who know what some of the just plain 303 fluids are. If they say they meet or licensed for a current spec I'm sure there fine, and honestly any of the 300 fluids I would not be scared of in an old geared tractor made in that era. I probably would want something a little better if we were talking a 2016 Kubota or John deere but were not so that argument is moot.

Welcome to the forum and stick around and ask any questions.
