I recently purchased a 53 NAA, and while replacing the PTO shaft, I discovered the rear differential leaking fluid at the gasket between the left axle housing and the center housing. Its a minor leak, which I was inclined to live with, until it discovered that the fluid I drained from the differential was 80-90w gear oil, not the thinner 134D i plan to put back in. I am sure the lower viscosity of the hydraulic fluid will turn that little leak into a serious one.

So, my question is, is there a way to break the axle housing from the center housing without completely disassembling the axle/seals and everything in between, or am I stuck renewing everything to replace the gasket?

Thanks,

Matt

Just for terminology's sake, they generally call the axle housing a trumpet - because of it's shape.
That said, yes you can remove the whole trumpet with brake drums, etc in one piece.
Take the tire off and disconnect the brake linkage. You will want an engine hoist or somesuch to lift it as it's heavy. Two stout men can do it too.

Thank you. I have no doubt its heavy...but couldn't tell from the drawings and manual if it was as simple as un-bolting the housing and pulling it away from the tractor.
