Very ignorant and new tractor owner here. I leveraged the expertise of my multigenerational farming friend to help me find an inexpensive tractor that needed some work. Last night I purchased a 1981 Massey 255 with a front loader that needs a new clutch.
The 255 is wider than I had ideally hoped for. She barely won't fit on my trailer, she will be a tight squeeze through my fence gates, and I have some roads cut through the woods that she won't fit through without me widening the roads.
Is it a good idea to put smaller and narrower tires on her?
She won't be used for any row cropping, just brush clearing, augering, road building, etc. I do have some steep slopes on my property that she will need to safely navigate.
I figure narrower tires will make the tractor more prone to rolling over. But, if I also get lower diameter tires, that should lower my center of gravity and offset the rollover risks of narrow tires.
