Now that I have the HST working properly, the next thing is to clean the engine oil system. The oil is coal black, and the filter is fairly old looking. Can anyone recommend a method of cleaning? I'm particularly concerned about gook in the rings. Again, this is my first diesel, so if it should not be a concern, pardon my ignorance. Thanks,
Andy

Next mission: trans/hyd fluids............

Andy, run it till it's good and warmed up. Drain the oil while it's still warm, go do something else for a while while it's draining. Then replace the filter and oil. If your still not happy with the way the oil looks just repeat the process, no big deal.

If this is your first diesel anything, you are probably not accustomed to seeing lube oil this black. Don't worry, this is normal for a diesel. The black is soot (carbon) suspended in the oil and is not an indicator of oil quality or lack thereof.

I have never figured out why a diesel gets soot in the crankcase whereas gas engines apparently don't, but every diesel I've ever owned turned its oil black in short order.
