Nasty Weather

/ Nasty Weather #21
This post really brings back old memories. When I bought my first home, I had to sell my good car to come up with the rest of the down payment (remember the days when you actually had to have 1/3 down /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif and a job to get a mortgage?). It was right on the lake shore, which porvided a good deal of snow and ice from lake spray on stormy nights. I bought an old 1963 Beetle for fifty bucks, knowing it would be good in the snow /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif and thrifty on gas use. What I didn't know, was how badly the heat/defrost worked (or didn't work, depending on your perspective). Since my job at the time was only about six miles from home, I got a great idea /w3tcompact/icons/clever.gif. I took one of those dual watt Arvin heaters and set it on the back seat, ran a cord out the back window of the VW and one out the cellar window of my house. Right before I showered in the morning, I would run down cellar, plug the heater in and when I left for work, unplug it from the car. It would be all defrosted and warm as toast. As I neared my destination the windows would start to freeze up again. On real bad days, I would have to drive it into one of the truck bays to thaw it out before I could go home in the evening.
