Navigation to Next/Previous Threads

For a long time now I have been using the Next or Previous links at the end of a thread to navigate within a forum. Lately, the threads are not being presented in the same order as in the forum index. Instead it seems like they are presented in the same order as presented the very first time each thread was presented to me, although I have not been able to confirm this. So if I select the 20th thread in the list, next may take me to the 18th thread; next on that thread may take me to the 26th thread. I've only noticed the problem this week, since I was off for several days. I don't know if there is any corrollation but Micorsoft in their infinite wisdom automatically upgraded my Internet Explorer form IE8 to IE9 about three weeks ago.

Any help you can give me will be appreciated, as I like to start reading in a forum with the oldest thread (based on last post date) using Next to the newest, and then getting a message when there are no more threads to view.
